Hanover Legion baseball Post 149 still in playoff hunt

The hunt is on for a playoff spot in Zone 10 and there is not much time left in the season.

The Hanover American Legion Baseball team is fighting for one of the eight playoff spots in Zone 10 and the regular season comes to an end this weekend.

?We are still in the hunt,? said Hanover coach David Liffers. ?We will need some luck. The schedule is favorable for us.?

?Post 149 has games with Duxbury, Plymouth, Kingston and Orleans to wrap up the season.

?Hanover knows it needs to get their offense in gear to make things happen for them. They have been able to get people on base, but they have not been effective in bringing them in.? In its game with Sandwich, Post 149 left the bases loaded in both the first and seventh innings in a 3-0 loss.

?They were able do just enough in their 2-0 win over Whitman at home.

??We are just missing,? said Liffers. ?We are just missing that clutch hit. We have not been able to get the hit with people in scoring position with one or two outs. If we have been able to do it we would have at least 10 games.?

Ryan Earle pitched a complete game for the 2-0 win over Whitman. He allowed three hits, struck out two and walked one and retired the final nine batters of the game. Scott Anderson and Ryan Kelleher both had solid defensive plays to help Earle finish up the game in style.

Dana Elkhill drove in runs in both the second and the fourth innings for Post 149. Rob Blakeslee and Ryan Kelleher scored the runs for Hanover.

??We were hitting the ball very well at the beginning of the season,? said Liffers. ?It seems like everyone got the book on us. We have not seen many fastball pitchers. We have seen more off speed pitching. We are making constant contact. We are not striking out that much.

?The balls that we have hit hard are not getting through. We had a ball that we hit hard the other night against the Hawkeye Athletic Club their shortstop made a fantastic diving stop of a grounder and threw out our hitter and took two runs away from us.?

Blakeslee had a two run triple in the first inning and Earle drove in a run with a single in the third inning against Hawkeye.

They had a 2-0 lead after an inning, but Hawkeye came back with a pair of five-run innings as they defeated Post 149 13-3 in a game called after six innings because of darkness.

?Blakeslee had two hits in the Sandwich game as Hanover left 10 runners on for the game in its 3-0 loss.

??We can?t get that big clutch hit,? said Liffers.

In most recent action, Post 149 lost 8-4 at Kingston, Monday night.
