Our 6th Child - Adoption.com Forums

I am a Mommy to five...Birdman (17), Shmoobi (16), Sport (11), Princess (3) & Jazzy (2). Shmoobi is our biological son, the other four our our adoptive/foster children. I run an in-home daycare caring for my two daughters, three 2 year old girls and two school age girls. Well Sport & Jazzy's biological mother delivered a healthy baby girl last Friday and the baby was placed into foster care into our home. I am trying to manage my daycare plus my toddler daughters with a newborn baby girl. Here are some questions for those with infants and toddlers?

* Do you go outside often? We were going out 2-4 hours a day? I am in Western NY so it can get cold here!
* Do you ask the toddlers not to touch the baby (germs)?
* Do you limit field trips and outings? We currently attend an outside pre-school T/Th and ballet Friday plus a field trip Wednesdays.
* Do you have any advice for a Mommy of six/ having three girls ages 3 and under?

My husband and I are so happy to have such a big family but are working on finding our new routine and making it work for us giving all our children attention, love and guidance!

Razer Blade review (late 2012)

Second-generation Razer Blade review

Razer has made a habit of catching us off guard -- breaking the mold as an accessory manufacturer by building laptops, prototype game handhelds and controller-toting tablets. Their Blade laptop cut through our expectations as well, featuring a beautiful aluminum shell and one of the thinnest profiles of any gaming rig on the market. It had some serious flaws, though: it was underpowered, had minor build issues and simply fell short in the audio department. Its maker, apparently, wasn't deterred: mere months after the original Blade's own debut, Razer is now introducing a successor.

Most of the changes are internal: this model swaps out the original's Sandy Bridge CPU and last-generation NVIDIA graphics for a newly announced 2.2GHz Intel Core i7-3632QM processor and a Kepler-based GeForce GTX 660M GPU. It caught our interest -- Razer had previously insisted its first laptop wasn't built just for power, but for a premium experience. Now, the firm seems to be focusing on both (now that's a premium experience we can get behind). So, is this upgrade enough to make up for the OG version's shortcomings? Read on to find out.

Successful Online Business Ideas

There is not hard to come by online business ideas that are able to generate a steady income flow, allowing people to work from home and manage their time as they please. Some people are still quite skeptical when it comes to working solely on the Internet and obtaining increased profits with every month, when more and more traffic is registered by websites.

This may be due to the fact that they haven?t read the right guides to lead them towards building a successful online business. Moreover, nowadays there are tested programs that can generate sales and therefore high commissions for you. All people need is to choose the best software and luckily this website has succeeded in doing that.

If you have heard of people that have made hundreds of dollars in a matter of days and you are still wondering how they accomplished building such empowering online business ideas then this article will reveal readers the full methods.

Online Business Ideas ? Revealed Methods

The best online business ideas don?t focus their attention on people that already possess the entire technical package. Nowadays, there is no need for knowing how the Internet appeared because there are people that are willing to share their strategies, people that offer software programs and complete guides.

One great method in the field of online business ideas is CPA Affiliate. No investment is required and profits can be achieved even without you having to build a website. Income presents itself in the form of commissions, as high as 50% from each sale. The products are not yours, are from global companies which offer high commissions in order to convince people to sell for them. Their revenues increase and so do yours.

On the list of online business ideas we must mention eBay. Everyone has heard of this massive website but until now maybe you thought of it only as a place where you enter and buy the necessary products. From now on, buyers can become sellers, if they have the motivation. There is no better motivation than making money from home without too much effort. A small investment is required for auctioning products and then selling them to people from all over the world, a digital camera, and of course being connected to the Internet. If you read about people who have made money on eBay you would be surprised about how much money can be made from selling auctioned products.

Online Business Ideas Materials

Online business ideas are not rocket science and being truly successful is not like landing on the Moon. Following the right directions and taking advice from people that have actually generated income with the help of their methods is the path. These online businessmen present their methods step by step in affordable eBooks, one example being Money on eBay.

Those are some well spent dollars and even if you feel that for the moment the method is not suitable, you will feel no regrets because after all you haven?t spent a small fortune and learned nothing. Everyone should give it a try and build an online business and after that, in return, the respective persons will share their online business ideas with other people just as eager to make money working from home.

Warnings follow alcohol enema case at University of Tennessee

By ERIK SCHELZIG | Tbo.com

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. ? Before an unruly Tennessee party ended with a student hospitalized for a dangerously high blood alcohol level, most people had probably never heard of alcohol enemas.

Thanks to the drunken exploits of a fraternity at the University of Tennessee, the bizarre way of getting drunk is giving parents, administrators and health care workers a new fear.

When Alexander "Xander" Broughton, 20, was delivered to the hospital after midnight on Sept. 22, his blood alcohol level was measured at 0.448 percent ? nearly six times the intoxication that defines drunken driving in the state. Injuries to his rectum led hospital officials to fear he had been sodomized.

Police documents show that when an officer interviewed a fellow fraternity member about what happened, the student said the injuries had been caused by an alcohol enema.

"It is believed that members of the fraternity were utilizing rubber tubing inserted into their rectums as a conduit for alcohol," according to a police report.

While Broughton told police he remembered participating in a drinking game with fellow members of the Pi Kappa Alpha chapter, he denied having an alcohol enema. Police concluded otherwise from evidence they found at the frat house, including boxes of Franzia Sunset Blush wine.

"He also had no recollection of losing control of his bowels and defecating on himself," according to a university police report that includes photos of the mess left behind in the fraternity house after the party.

Broughton did not respond to a cellphone message seeking comment on Friday.

The university responded with a swift investigation and a decision Friday to shutter the fraternity until at least 2015. The national Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity organization also accepted the withdrawal of the campus charter.

Alcohol enemas have been the punch lines of YouTube videos, a stunt in a "Jackass" movie and a song by the punk band NOFX called "Party Enema."

But Corey Slovis, chairman of department of emergency medicine and Vanderbilt University Medical Center, said actually going through with the deed can have severe consequences.

"It's something that offers no advantages, while at the same time risking someone's life," he said.

The procedure bypasses the stomach, accelerating the absorption rate, Slovis said. Pouring the alcohol through a funnel can increase the amount of alcohol consumed because it's hard to gauge how much is going in.

"When you're dumping it into your rectum, often via a funnel, one or two ounces seems like such a minuscule amount," he said. Ingesting more can create unconsciousness quite quickly, he explained.

The effects have been fatal in at least one case. An autopsy performed after the death of a 58-year-old Texas man in 2004 showed he had been given an enema with enough sherry to have a blood alcohol level of 0.47 percent. Negligent homicide charges were later dropped against his wife, who said she gave him the enema.

Students walking across campus this week generally responded with sighs and eye rolls when asked about the allegations.

"It's like a big joke," said Erica Davis, a freshman from Hendersonville. "Because who does that?"

Gordon Ray, a senior from Morristown, said the details of the case caught him off guard, but not the fact that fraternity members would be overdoing it with alcohol.

"It is definitely over the top," said Ray. "But it doesn't surprise me, I don't guess."

The harm the news has done to the university's national reputation was on the mind of several students.

"If someone wants to be stupid, then they should do it where it won't affect anyone else," said Marlon Alessandra, freshman from Independence, Va.

James E. Lange, who coordinates alcohol and drug abuse prevention strategies at San Diego State University, said alcohol enemas aren't a common occurrence on campuses, though normal consumption still contributes to hundreds of student deaths annually. And many of those can be attributed to reckless attitudes about the consequences of heavy drinking, he said.

"It's not unusual to hear that students are drinking to get drunk," he said.

Lange said he hopes students don't draw the wrong lessons from the University of Tennessee incident.

"Students and people in general are pretty good at denying that they are at risk for whatever happened to someone else," he said. "So they can look at something like this and say `I'm OK because I would never do that.'

"However, they may be drinking heavily, or doing things like mixing alcohol with prescription meds that is putting them at serious risk," he said.

To Tennessee freshman Cody Privett of Sevierville, there's nothing appealing about the incident on his campus.

"It's stupid, it's an unfortunate situation," said Privett, of Sevierville. "I mean there's partying, and then there's other things."

Calif. kids' football team hit with bounty scandal

TUSTIN, Calif. (AP) ? In a pee-wee version of the NFL's bounty scandal, the head coach and league president of an Orange County children's football team have been suspended amid allegations that players were offered up to $50 in cash to knock opponents out of games.

National Pop Warner officials suspended Darren Crawford of the Tustin Pee Wee Red Cobras and Tustin President Pat Galentine until the program can investigate and rule on the allegations, according to the Orange County Register (bit.ly/OsCHwh).

The investigation is expected to take at least several weeks, Pop Warner spokesman Josh Pruce said.

The Cobras, consisting mainly of 10- and 11-year-olds, advanced to the Pop Warner Super Bowl last year and finished the season with a 12-1 record.

A group of parents alleged that during the season, Crawford and a then-assistant coach, Richard Bowman, offered youngsters cash for big hits and to knock targeted opposing players out of playoff games.

One boy left a game because of a mild concussion and another former assistant coach, John Zanelli, claims the player that hit him was rewarded with cash.

Crawford, Bowman and Galentine consistently have denied that any cash incentives were paid.

Pop Warner's Orange Empire Conference commissioner, Bobby Espinosa, said he found no evidence of a bounty program after reviewing allegations from six parents and four players. They alleged that bounties of between $20 and $50 were offered during three playoff games at the end of the 2011 season, the Register reported.

Galentine sent Tustin Pop Warner board members an email Thursday about the suspensions.

"The singular focus of our board continues to be the safety and well-being of our kids and the continued success of TPW," he wrote, urging support for young players who "have been placed in the crossfire of this issue by no choice of their own."

Former Tustin Pop Warner President Mark Gutierrez was named acting president during Galentine's absence.

The NFL suspended four players after concluding they were involved in a pay-for-injury bounty pool that ran for three seasons from 2009-2011 and offered cash rewards for knocking opposing players out of games.

The players were reinstated after they successfully appealed the suspensions. New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton was suspended for the season.

A's gain ground on Rangers

By JANIE McCAULEY

AP Baseball Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:25 a.m. ET Sept. 29, 2012

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Stephen Drew hit a two-run homer, Coco Crisp had a leadoff shot and the Oakland Athletics gained ground on the first-place Texas Rangers in the AL West with an 8-2 win against the Seattle Mariners on Friday night.

The A's trail the two-time defending AL champions by three games with five to play. The Rangers lost 7-4 at home to the Los Angeles Angels. Texas finishes the season with three games in Oakland starting Monday.

Josh Donaldson had a two-run single in a four-run seventh and A.J. Griffin (7-1) received ample support as the A's stayed two games ahead of the Angels in the race for the second wild card. Tampa Bay fell three back after losing to the Chicago White Sox.

Oakland (89-68) has a magic number of four to clinch the club's first playoff berth since being swept by the Tigers in the 2006 AL championship series.

The A's won six months to the day after these clubs kicked off the 2012 schedule in Tokyo - and Oakland's opening-day starter, Brandon McCarthy, was back with the team just more than three weeks after undergoing brain surgery following a line drive off the bat of the Angels' Erick Aybar that struck him on the right side of the head.

McCarthy plans to stick around through the season's last homestand, and it's primed to be quite a final five games.

Oakland manager Bob Melvin waited to post a lineup until after watching Crisp go through pregame activities considering the leadoff man had missed nine straight starts and 10 of 11 because of an eye infection.

Apparently, he saw the ball just fine when he sent a 3-2 pitch from starter Blake Beavan (10-11) over the right-field wall for his 11th home run. It was Crisp's fourth leadoff shot this year and the eighth of his career.

Crisp made a perfect slide to score an insurance run in the fifth on a passed ball. Yoenis Cespedes drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh and made a pretty diving catch on a liner to left-center in the eighth to rob Jesus Montero of a hit.

Trayvon Robinson followed Crisp's homer with a tying drive in the second, then Drew responded with his fifth homer since joining the A's from Arizona on Aug. 20 and seventh overall.

Michael Saunders also homered for Seattle, which snapped a three-game losing streak Thursday in Anaheim but didn't do enough in this one for Beavan.

Griffin, one of five rookies in the rotation, allowed one run and four hits in 5 2-3 innings. He struck out four and walked two. Griffin was winless in his previous two starts after winning his first six decisions.

Seattle center fielder Franklin Gutierrez was held out of the lineup a day after crashing into the wall to make a catch against the Angels. He banged his wrist, shoulder and head on the play, but said he was fine Friday.

"I don't have anything, just a little stiff in my neck. It's nothing major," said Gutierrez, who hopes to play Saturday. "I hit it pretty good, the wall."

Mariners manager Eric Wedge said he expects Gutierrez to play the final five games of the season.

NOTES: Mariners ace Felix Hernandez said he plans to play for Venezuela again in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. A spring program for him will be determined after the season. ... The A's clinched the season series (10-7) after losing last year's season series 10-9. ... A's LHP Brett Anderson, who strained his right oblique after a strong return from last year's Tommy John surgery, could still be back if the team makes the playoffs. ... Oakland OF Jonny Gomes, who grew up in nearby Petaluma and assisted the Little League World Series squad from his hometown, received the 2012 Dave Stewart Community Service Award. "I think it should be in the job description or should be in the title of being a professional athlete," Gomes said. "I think you have so many avenues, once you get to the top, to be able to help people out." ... Seattle has 12 errors in its last 13 games, going 4-9. ... RHP Dan Straily (2-1) pitches Saturday for the A's against LHP Jason Vargas (14-11).

CompTIA is working on developing the Mobility+ certification

The trend towards mobility is undeniable, but I'm just not sure about this direction for compTIA. I don't think we're going to see a lot of people go after this because the market won't be looking for it. Most helpdesks will already hire without A+, and I don't see them adding mobility+ as a requirement. I don't see many organizations as needing to split helpdesk for different user hardware devices. Maybe at a few organizations, but I think by and large mobility doesn't change the ideal structure. One of the biggest benefits to tablet and phone integration is that the modern platforms are easy to support.

The complexities and costs are in preparing the infrastructure for these devices. You have to design, implement, and manage an MDM solution that is tied in with security needs and business goals. You hire an experienced, skill admin team for that, not a bunch of helpdesk guys with a lame Comptia cert.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I really see Comptia's certification lineup as becoming a really lame way to try to maintain relevance in all facets of the industry. The trio is good for entry level and for getting an improved, holistic understanding of infrastructure, and maybe Server+ and Linux+ help as well, but the rest is pretty much nonsense. Healthcare, cloud, green, strata, CASP, and now mobility? They're not gaining buy-in from the market and I don't think they're going to. They don't solve organizational needs and don't act as serious differentiators between job candidates. So much of the industry is already not fully on-board with the staples that I think introducing new certs like this are just a waste of money on Comptia's part.

Instead, Comptia should be changing the structure of A+, Net+, and Sec+ to include troubleshooting common OS/hardware problems on smartphones/tablets, understanding how they communicate with a corporate network, and understanding the implications they have for security, respectively. Wireless is an integral part of most networks at this point; there is just no reason to separate it from Net+ and Sec+ any further. Adding another cert for people to spend $200-$500 and weeks of study on to fulfill a minor need just doesn't make sense to me. I think the trio is appropriate for entry-level and that Comptia should focus its efforts on keeping those exams well-rounded and relevant.

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe mobility will start to take place as its own department in organizations and its own true specialization for professionals, and maybe this certification will come into play. I'm betting on the other direction -- it gets integrated as a subset of systems and network administration and support roles. An integral subset, for sure, but not a focus.

Edit: One thing I do see is the shift away from such bottom-heavy IT organizations. As platforms improve, we're going to see bigger focuses on successful admin and engineering teams deploying solutions that work well, reliably, and intuitively. I think this is happening regardless of mobility, as maintenance costs go down and application delivery becomes easier.

Wall-Ye robot does grunt work at vineyards

4 hrs.

Winemaking is the latest industry to be hit by robot?fever: French inventors have created a robot that rolls among the grapevines, checking and perhaps pruning as it goes.

A wine grower in France complained three years ago to?Christophe Millot that they were always short on staff. Millot designed the Wall-Ye robot, which is indeed named after Pixar's trash-collecting WALL-E, and the pair have been working together on it ever since.

Wall-Ye moves around on treads and is equipped with a number of cameras for navigation and inspection of vines.?It navigates by GPS, but also recognizes each plant individually and can carry out?special instructions or follow up on previous work.

There are plans to make it able to prune vines and eventually pick grapes, but for now it is limited to less complicated tasks. But checking for bugs, disease, temperature variations and soil problems are important parts of running a vineyard ? and they can be tedious.

Another winemaker, Claire Gazeau-Montrasi, explains in the AFP video above?that she would welcome a robot that took care of the most boring jobs. Like a Roomba or similar household robot, it can do its job slowly but surely, working around its owner's schedule.

At ?25,000, or around $32,000, Wall-Ye isn't cheap, though there are larger and more expensive systems that are capable of more. Automation of agriculture hasn't made it to vineyards quite yet because of the delicate nature of the task, but that may soon change, with?robots like Wall-Ye leading the charge.

Devin Coldewey is a contributing writer for NBC News Digital. His personal website is coldewey.cc.

Indian aviation: only itself to blame | beyondbrics

Will the Indian aviation industry ever learn? Last year, as beyondbrics reported, the industry was is turmoil after state carrier Air India initiated a price war that caused the airlines to spiral into a $20bn collective debt hole.

Now it seems, they?re at it again. Air India started the cutting, announcing its jaldi jaldi scheme last Thursday, an early bird program that offers up to 40 per cent discounts on certain routes booked in advance. Let another price war commence.

The scheme is a response to the aviation minister, who asked the state carrier to provide a plan to increase its market share, which has fallen to 18.2 per cent, putting it in fourth place among India?s airlines.

By Wednesday, Jet Airways and number-one carrier IndiGo had both announced similar schemes, with SpiceJet expected to follow suit shortly.

Considering that the fuel sales taxes that have hurt the industry remain high, fuel prices are close to all-time highs, and airport charges continue to increase, airlines have no business slashing rates, analysts said. But intense competition fueled by a drop in demand has forced them to cut ? and that?s not good news for anyone, and is unlikely to entice any foreign airlines to take advantage of the new policy allowing them to invest up to 49 per cent in local carriers.

?If one [airline] goes at it with such a scheme the others have to [follow] ? you can?t fly with an empty airplane,? said Sharan Lillaney, analyst at Angel Broking. ?People are price sensitive, they will go for the cheaper ticket. So one [airline] will follow another, and the next will follow that one and everyone will end up making losses again ? this is just not sustainable.?

From January to August, Indian airlines carried 39.8m passengers, in an increase of just 0.5 per cent over the same period last year, according to data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, compared to the double digit passenger growth the industry once saw. Meanwhile, flights are flying at around 70 per cent capacity, and closer to 60 per cent for some airlines, and a cheaper ticket sold is better than no ticket at all.

That?s good for consumers, but bad for business.

Communication Skills: Top 10 Tips for Tough Conversations With ...

Executive communication expert Dianna Booher shares tips for tough conversations

I wish had the proverbial nickel for every participant in one of my sessions who has approached me after the program with a comment that began, ?Have you got a minute for a question? My boss and I just don?t get along. We need to have a conversation, but he/she?? From there, the story and details diverge.

But here?s the commonality: The conflict has been ongoing, stress has clearly altered productivity and results, and both parties have crashed against a communication barrier that seems insurmountable.

If you find yourself in that same predicament, consider these tips for a straightforward conversation that helps you break through that wall of hard feelings and misunderstandings.

    1. Realize that two sides can be right. Conflict is not a competitive sport. The other person does not have to lose for you to win.

    2. Communicate what happened, what you have concluded about what happened, and how you feel about what happened. Then listen for the same information from the other person. You will uncover hidden invalid assumptions, wrong interpretations, and inaccurate information.

    3. Make a conscious choice about whether you will accommodate, compromise, overpower, or collaborate to come to resolution. Backing people into a corner rarely serves good purpose. But you yourself may decide to accommodate the other person?s wishes to ?bank a favor? when something is not all that important to you. Remembering that you have a choice in the matter helps.

    4. Define areas or issues that you agree on and move forward from there. Refocus on your goal rather than the obstacle.

    5. Work to create alternatives. When locked in a stalemate, try brainstorming to generate new ideas to meet your goals.

    6. State the real reasons for your feelings or objections?not just logical ones. Otherwise, the other person may remove the obstacle you?ve mentioned, and the problem will remain unsolved.

    7. Prefer statements to questions during conflict. Instead of ?Why didn?t you tell me about car?? State, ?I wish you had told me about car.? A question typically generates an argument. A statement typically elicits a response?either agreement or disagreement.

    8. Discuss a problem sitting down. You?ll be less likely to use intimidating body language or make a dramatic exit from the conversation in a huff.

    9. Describe; don?t label. People can respond to statements like, ?Your reports are missing key information.? They can confirm or deny that ?fact.? Descriptions of what you see or what happened most often generate explanations. On the other hand, people can?t respond to a statement like, ?You?re evasive.? Labels and value judgments generate arguments.

    10. Avoid ?hot words.? Just like radioactive material, they trigger an explosion: anger, defensiveness, denial, or blame.

Granted, you and your boss may never become BFFs. But tactful, yet direct conversation goes a long way toward understanding. And a stress-free life.

La Vida Latina: Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month With The New ...

To celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, which started on Sept. 15 and ends on Oct. 15, we?ve gathered together some of our favorite articles and resources in The Times that celebrate the contributions and cultures of Hispanic-Americans.

In curating our selection, we tried to emphasize both the famous alongside the not-so-famous. We were excited when we discovered inspiring neighborhood stories as much as coverage of nationally recognized leaders. So, below you will find both Justice Sonia Sotomayor?s seminal lecture ?A Latina Judge?s Voice? and a video about what it means to be Garifuna in the United States.

Our intention is to help show, in ways large and small, how Hispanic-Americans have helped shape the United States and make it into the diverse and dynamic nation it is today.

We invite you to share any additional resources you recommend in your comments below.

Ways to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month With Your Students

    1. Learn about famous Hispanic or Latino Americans. Research notable figures, past and present, and write short biographies or create visual presentations about their accomplishments, like a Glog. For inspiration, here is a short list of some important people covered in Times reporting:

Or for fun, students can challenge themselves with our Hispanic Heritage Crossword.

    2. Explore cuisine or, better yet, prepare a meal. Check out one or more of the following New York Times sources to discover how Hispanic-Americans are helping to redefine what meals look like in the United States. You may even be inspired to plan and serve food together as a class.

    3. Examine the diversity of Hispanic identity. What does it mean to be Hispanic? When it comes to identity, how do culture, ethnicity and race intersect? How are Hispanics portrayed and perceived in mass media? You might also reflect on your own heritage or examine why ethnic and racial categories, like Hispanic, are rejected by some. Below is a video about Garifunas, who are part African, part Caribbean and part Central American.

    4. Travel to Latin America or your local Latino neighborhood. Research and create a travel itinerary that focuses on Hispanic heritage sites in your local community or elsewhere. Use New York Times Travel sources, Latin America Through a Lens and Miami: Hispanic Heritage Tour as your inspiration.

    5. See Hispanic-American art. Watch the slide show from the Museo del Barrio?s ?Testimonios: 100 Years of Popular Expression? exhibit or ?Quiet Riot | The Art of Wilfredo Prieto.? Or read Rescuing the Stories Behind Latino Art, an article about a Houston museum?s creation of a digital archive to preserve the stories behind Latin American and Latino art. Or, get involved in the debate about whether there should be a National Latino Museum on the National Mall.

    6. Read literature by Hispanic-American writers. As a class, in book groups or independently, students can read works by Latino authors, like Isabel Allende, Sandra Cisneros and Oscar Hijuelos. In response to the literature, students can write their own book reviews, modeled after Times reviews, like this recent review of Junot Diaz?s latest short story collection, ?This Is How You Lose Her.?

    7. Listen to Latin music. Play music from South America, Central America and the Caribbean, and have students listen closely to the sounds they hear. Ask students, what emotions does the music evoke? How would they describe the rhythm, instruments and vocals? Then, follow with a discussion about how Latin music is influencing music all across the United States. Some related Times resources that can help enrich the discussion are:

    8. View and discuss photography about the experience of Hispanic-Americans. Learn how one artist uses his work to explore Puerto Rican cultural identity. Or, view ?Life on Both Sides of the Border,? a series of photographs about life for Mexicans on both sides of the Mexico-U.S. border, by Joseph Rodriguez.

    9. Study how Latinos are reshaping the political landscape. Read any combination of the following New York Times resources and write expository essays on the shifting electorate and role of Latino voters.

    10. Or, follow your own interests. Have students learn more about the role of Hispanic-Americans using any of the resources above, Times Topics on Hispanic Americans or from additional subject areas below:

    Television

Chevron says Richmond repair time unknown

RICHMOND, California (Reuters) - Chevron Corp needs a few more weeks to assess damage at its plant in Richmond, California, and does not yet know how long it will need to repair its crude unit after an early August fire damaged the state's second-biggest refinery, its general manager said on Monday.

The 245,000 barrels-per-day plant, which accounts for one-eighth of California's refining capacity, has run at a "reduced" rate since the fire, and this has risen only marginally since then, General Manager Nigel Hearne said in an interview.

The lower throughput caused a jump in gasoline prices in California as traders scrambled to find alternative supplies. The crude unit shutdown has left California, which consumes more gasoline than any other U.S. state, vulnerable to price spikes when any of the state's 15 refineries have problems.

The cause of the fire is also of great concern for the people living near the refinery. While investigations are still under way, the focus has centered on a failed pipe component less than 5 feet long.

More than 200 residents gathered in a Richmond auditorium on Monday night to ask questions of the various regulatory bodies investigating the fire.

Chemical Safety Board investigator Steve Cutchen said sections of the wall of the pipe had thinned to 20 percent of its design, and called the accident a "close call" that "could have been far worse."

Chevron said this pipe had a low-silicon content, making it more susceptible to corrosion, which was understood by its technical staff but not acted upon. "Clearly it wasn't, so the question is why wasn't it," Hearne said in the interview.

    PLANT STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION

Chevron found that, in a scheduled maintenance in November 2011, the 200 feet of piping in question had been inspected in 19 different locations, but not the component that failed.

Asked how long the plant would be down, Hearne said assessments of the damage would need to be completed in the "next few weeks" to establish the timeline for repairs.

"We're still in the process of fully inspecting the plant," he said, including every individual component in carbon steel systems exposed to the same "high-temperature sulfidation corrosion" that it believes affected the pipe.

Full access to the refinery had just been opened up by investigators. Analysts had expected repairs to the refinery's crude distillation unit, known as Crude Unit No. 4, to take between 3 months and 6 months. The hydrocarbons being processed at the plant were being provided by both the market and Chevron's other U.S. refineries, he added.

The Richmond refinery, Chevron's oldest, opened 110 years ago.

On Sunday, the San Francisco Chronicle reported the plant was being investigated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency over a 3-inch (7.6-centimeter) pipe that let emissions bypass pollution control equipment.

An EPA representative told the meeting on Monday that he could not give any timeline on that investigation, which is not related to the fire.

Hearne said the pipe was not a deliberate design, and had been in place before the implementation of monitoring of flaring at the refinery. Chevron advised air quality regulators of the pipe three years ago, and had reviewed the rest of the refinery to make sure there were no similar lines elsewhere.

But Loni Hancock, the California state senator for the local area, summed up the exasperation of many residents about the 3-inch pipe when she told the meeting on Monday night: "Whether inadvertent or deliberate, there's got to be a way to ensure that never happens again."

University of Calgary geography professor predicts serious consequences for the planet

Think of the poor hamster on the treadmill. Steadily picking up speed and caught up by the momentum, unable to stop until it is overwhelmed and sent tumbling, crashing out of control inside the spinning wheel.

That's the analogy John Yackel, head of the Department of Geography, makes when he considers the annual summer ice melt in the Arctic, which he's been closely monitoring for the past 15 years, documenting the ice cover as it has steadily shrunk in the wake of Arctic and global warming.

Last week marked the unofficial peak, or the end of the summer ice melt, with ice levels more dramatically diminished than at any time since satellite monitoring began 33 years ago.

The previous record low for Arctic sea ice extent was set on September 18, 2007 with a 4.17 million square kilometer ice cap. That was shattered this year by the end of August when it had melted to below 4 million square kilometers. "This the smallest minimum ice extent we've ever had, and not just in the satellite record, but probably in the last million years," says Yackel, a sea ice geophysicist and climatologist. From the patterns he has observed, this year's extreme melt could be the beginning of a frightening trend.

Yackel and the university-based Cryosphere Climate Research Group use satellite technology to research the physical properties of Arctic ice.

As recently as the 1980s, most of the ice in the Arctic Ocean was "multi-year ice" thick ice that would remain throughout the summer. At that time the split between multi-year ice and seasonal ice ice that would melt away in the summer was about 80 per cent multi-year and 20 per cent seasonal. "In the last 20 years we've almost gotten to the point where we've reversed that ratio and that's significant because the seasonal ice is so much thinner than the multi-year ice and it will melt easily come summer," Yackel says.

Yackel predicts the ice extent that covers the Arctic Ocean "is likely to be gone in the summers within the next 20 to 25 years, if not sooner."

The depleting ice cover in the Arctic Ocean would have serious ramifications for the planet. Arctic ice acts as a reflector of sunlight, helping regulate the Earth's temperature, cooling the climate. "When there's no longer that sea ice below the air mass and it's just open ocean, that's when more moisture off the ocean's surface gets into the atmosphere and the water vapor in the atmosphere makes for more violent storms," says Yackel. "We can also expect to see an increase in storm frequency and storm intensity for most of the world's populated places as the Arctic and Earth continues to warm."
