Zynga warning on player spending hits shares (Reuters)
(Reuters) ? Zynga Inc's shares fell 16 percent on Wednesday, amid heavy volumes, after the social gaming company warned of a slowdown in bookings, indicating paying players may be spending less than expected.
A lackluster fourth-quarter showing -- Zynga's first as a publicly traded company -- and expectations of sequentially slowing bookings in the first half of 2012, may rattle bullish industry watchers who have driven up the company's valuations.
"Core game monetization is slowing more rapidly than expected," Macquaries Equities Research wrote in research note.
For 2012, Zynga projected bookings between $1.35 billion and $1.45 billion -- a year-over-year growth of 16 percent to 25 percent. Bookings grew 38 percent to $1.16 billion in 2011.
Zynga uses bookings as a metric to measure the cash it gets upfront when people spend money on virtual items in its games such as tractors, houses or poker chips.
At least three brokerages downgraded the stock.
The owner of the popular Farmville and Cityville games does not disclose the number of its unique payers on Facebook, making it difficult to gauge any possible deceleration trends.
Investors are closely watching how Zynga -- which gets almost all its revenue from Facebook, as it said while filing for its IPO last year -- diversify and make money from games on smartphones and tablets.
Evercore Partners said the company's stock -- trading at 31 times the brokerage's 2013 estimate for earnings before interest taxes depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) -- bears risk, and downgraded it to "under weight" from "equal weight."
The company, which went public in December, trades nearly 67 times forward earnings, compared with the sector average of 12, according to Thomson Reuters data.
Analysts, however, remain convinced that Zynga is well positioned for longer-term growth.
"Zynga was one of the key developers that turned Facebook from a relatively passive communications medium to a more active and engaged social platform," Robert W. Baird & Co wrote in a research note, and downgraded the stock.
"While growth has slowed for both Facebook and Zynga, long-term secular shifts in content consumption, along with significant growth opportunities on smart devices from Apple and Google are too compelling to ignore."
Barclays Capital also cut its rating on the stock.
On Tuesday, Chief Operating Officer John Schapper said in an interview Zynga's games are designed to gain popularity and make money in the longer term.
"... That's why we still have the six-most played games on Facebook."
The company's Words with Friends, a Scrabble-like game, recently hit headlines after actor Alec Baldwin got kicked off an American Airlines flight for playing the game on his iPhone while the plane was parked at the gate.
The gamemaker's stock, which has jumped more than 30 percent since its December 16 debut, fell to $12.11 in early morning trade, making it one of the biggest percentage losers on the Nasdaq.
More than 22 million shares had changed hands by 10.55 ET, almost close to their 10-day average volumes.

Xi's visit is being closely watched because he will likely lead China over the coming decade, but his remarks after meetings with Obama and Vice President Joe Biden did not deviate from customary diplomatic rhetoric.
Xi is slated to become China's Communist Party leader in the fall, and president in 2013. His visit offers Washington its first hard look at the man who is destined to lead the world's most populous nation in the coming decade, when the U.S. and China are likely to see their economic ties grow even as they are viewed increasingly as military rivals.
"We are not always going to see eye-to-eye. We are not always going to see things exactly the same, but we have very important economic and political concerns that warrant that we work together," Biden said, before talks began in the Roosevelt Room.

More US states to join foreclosure-abuse deal
WASHINGTON (AP) ? Arizona, Michigan and Florida, three of the states hit hardest by the housing crisis, will join a nationwide settlement over foreclosure abuses, officials with direct knowledge say. They will join more than 40 other states in approving a deal that would benefit many Americans who lost their homes or can't afford their mortgages.
The three states' involvement buoys hopes that a full 50-state deal is imminent.
Formal announcements from Arizona and Florida could come within a week, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss the settlement publicly.
Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne said he first wants to resolve a separate foreclosure-related lawsuit his state filed against Bank of America.
Florida officials say they are still in discussions. Attorney General Pam Bondi "remains engaged in the settlement discussions in order to ensure that Floridians receive their fair share in the agreement," she said in a statement. Other officials said Florida intends to back the deal.
Michigan announced Tuesday it would join the settlement. Officials said the state would receive about $500 million in aid.
Michigan officials also said they would continue a criminal investigation into Docx, a unit of Lender Processing Services of Jacksonville, Fla. The company is accused of using fake signatures on phony foreclosure documents. Missouri filed criminal charges against the firm and its founder Friday, saying it falsified 68 notarized deeds on behalf of mortgage lenders.
The nationwide settlement stems from abuses that occurred after the housing bubble burst. Many companies that process foreclosures failed to verify documents. Some employees signed papers they hadn't read or used fake signatures to speed foreclosures ? an action known as robo-signing.
The deal would be the biggest involving a single industry since a 1998 multistate tobacco deal. It would force the five largest mortgage lenders to reduce loans for about 1 million households. The reduced loans would benefit homeowners who are behind on their payments and owe more than their homes are worth.
The lenders would also send checks for about $2,000 to hundreds of thousands of people who lost homes to foreclosure.
Five major states ? California, Delaware, Massachusetts, New York and Nevada ? are still considering whether to join the settlement. Massachusetts, which filed its own lawsuit against the five major lenders in December over deceptive foreclosure practices, has been quiet about its thinking.
But Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley acknowledged last month she thought a deal between the banks and states would be reached and that she would keep an "open mind" as to whether Massachusetts would accept an agreement.
California still has "significant sticking points," but they may be settled in the coming days, said officials with direct knowledge of the negotiations. That represents progress from a few weeks ago, when California Attorney General Kamala Harris called the proposed settlement "inadequate." California officials walked away from the negotiating table altogether in September.
California's backing is particularly crucial. It was among the states hardest hit by the foreclosure crisis. And it has the most residents "underwater": They owe more on their loan than their home is worth. Without California's participation, the money available to homeowners nationally would be about $19 billion rather than $25 billion.
Homeowners in states that opt out of the deal wouldn't share in the settlement money. The money available to homeowners could run as high as $25 billion if all states approve the deal.
The reduced loans would benefit homeowners who are behind on their payments and owe more than their homes are worth. The lenders would also send checks for about $2,000 to hundreds of thousands of people who lost homes to foreclosure.
The five lenders ? Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Citigroup and Ally Financial ? have already agreed to the settlement. In settling the charges, the states would agree not to pursue further investigations against the banks in civil court. The deal would not protect the banks from criminal investigations.

This op/ed is being written based upon my observations here in Southern California. I have often wondered about all the industrial parks I have seen pop up with little to no activity in those facilities.? This is my view of what we can expect to see in 2012 and beyond.?
The other shoe is about to fall in the world of real estate and it's not residential real estate.? It's?commercial real estate, which up to now hasn't really been in the news.? Commercial real estate loans, unlike home mortgages, have much shorter terms for repayment.? The typical home mortgage is for 20 to 30 years.? Most commercial real estate loans are for five years with monthly interest payments and a huge principal balloon payment at the end of the fifth year.? Here's where the problem begins.
Think back to the boom in 2007.? That's when commercial real estate was booming too.? All kinds of commercial real estate was popping up all over.? Think strip malls and industrial parks. That means a lot of commercial mortgages were being written to pay for these properties.? Fast forward five years when these mortgages come due.? Oh, wait, that would be this year, 2012.? Commercial real estate, like residential real estate is significantly depressed.? What happens when these mortgages and their huge balloon payments come due?? Well, borrowers could buy down those large balloon payments and attempt to refinance those loans, if they have the money to buy down the original loan principle remaining.? Chances are that businesses don't have that kind of cash, what with business being depressed.? So, what to do?
Commercial borrowers could attempt to refinance those original loans at the prevailing lower interest rates.? But, there is a catch.? The value of those commercial properties has plummeted precipitously like residential real estate.? Lenders aren't about to refinance those original commercial loans when the value of those properties has dropped well below the outstanding mortgage amount.? As an example, say a borrower bought a property at $100K and put down $20K with a loan of $80K.? The property now has a present value in the depressed commercial market of $60K.? How does a borrower refinance an $80K loan when the collateral is now worth $60K?? The answer is that no lender in their right mind would write such a loan.
That leads to the most likely final conclusion.? Bankruptcy.? The residential real estate market has yet to clear itself of a substantial percentage of underwater mortgages and it's had five years to do so.? Now along comes commercial real estate and the beginning of their trials to salvage their market.? Be prepared to see more vacant commercial properties popping up in a neighborhood near you this year, with more to follow in the years to come.
The commercial real estate bubble is about to break open big time.? The only thing that could save it would be for the overall economy to turn around on a dime and that prospect is about as dim as someone buying a lottery ticket and winning the big bonanza.

Samsung SyncMaster S23A550H
Samsung monitors have long been known for their style and solid image quality, and the SyncMaster S23A550H ($259.99 list) continues the trend. This 23-inch beauty delivers outstanding color quality and great dark grayscale performance, and does so without using much power. However, it only has one digital input and is short on features.
Design and Features
Fans of Samsung's Touch of Color design will appreciate the S23A550H's Rose Black finish, which happens to be the same finish used on the Samsung SyncMaster T220D. The 23-inch 1,920-by-1,080 TN+ panel is framed by reddish black bezels that are covered with clear trim and are slightly curved, giving the monitor a sense of style and preventing it from appearing too box-like. The Samsung logo appears on the lower bezel as well as on the back of the monitor. The 7 pound glossy black cabinet measures 1.5 inches at its thickest point and is supported by a clear round base with piano black trim. The mounting arm provides tilt adjustment, but lacks height and swivel movement. It also has a cover that unsnaps, so you can tuck cables away and keep them out of sight.
Input connections are sparse; you get an HDMI port and a VGA port, and that's it. A secondary HDMI port, like the one on the ViewSonic VX2753mh ($349.99 list, 4 stars), would make it much easier to connect to a gaming box or external Blu-ray player. In keeping with the clutter-free motif, a rounded cover snaps onto the back of the cabinet to hide the cable connectors.
There are six touch sensitive buttons on the right side of the lower bezel. In addition to the power switch, there's a Menu button that launches the on-screen display (OSD) menu, an ECO button that doubles as a navigation button, a brightness button that is also used for menu navigation, an input source/navigation button, and an Auto Adjust button for use with an analog signal. Pressing any button activates on-screen labeling above each button with icons that show you what the button does, making it easy to work your way through the menu system.
Picture settings include Samsung's Magic presets; MagicAngle lets you select one of six viewing angle modes optimized for your viewing position. For example, if you lean way back on your chair to the point where you look up to see the screen you can choose one of the Lean Back modes. There are also modes for standing and viewing from the side, but side angle viewing is already quite good on this monitor. You will get a better picture if you happen to be standing or sitting at an off angle, but the best all-around picture comes with this feature disabled and the monitor positioned for optimal viewing.
MagicBright consists of five presets offering brightness and contrast level settings that are optimized for specific applications. Standard mode gives you the best picture for everyday use and Cinema mode is useful for watching movies in a dimly lit room. Colors in the Game mode are way too oversaturated, and the Dynamic Contrast mode offers automatic brightness and contrast control depending on the content and is a bit sharper than Standard mode. Users can create their own preset using the Custom mode.
When enabled, MagicColor enhances skin tones and punches up colors in Full mode, while Intelligent mode enhances everything except skin tones. Both MagicColor settings produce slightly oversaturated colors and cannot be used when the MagicAngle feature is enabled. You can also tweak Red, Green, and Blue color levels, color temperature, and gamma settings.
The ECO button takes you to a screen with several neat power saving options; there's an ECO Motion Sensor setting that when enabled will put the monitor into power saving mode if no motion is detected. You can choose one of five time intervals (5, 10, 20, 30, or 60 minutes) for the sensor and have the screen turn off or go dim if no motion is detected during the selected time frame. You can also select one of three ECO Saving modes (Off, 75 percent, 50 percent). When set to Off the panel uses only 19 watts of power, which is great for a 23-inch panel, but not quite as good as the 24-inch Lenovo LS2421P Wide ($219.99 direct, 4 stars) (16-watts). Changing the setting to 75 percent knocks power usage down to 18 watts with only a slight decrease in luminance, while the 50 percent setting brings it down to 14 watts with a more noticeable loss of luminance. All things considered, I'd suggest leaving the ECO Saving mode off as this mode offers the best picture and doesn't use much power anyway. Either way, the S23A550H's low power characteristics and useful power-saving options earn it our GreenTech stamp of approval.
Performance
The S23A550H produces inky blacks, which in part helps it to deliver bold, well defined colors. The panel had no trouble displaying every shade of dark gray on the DisplayMate 64-Step Grayscale test, although light grays were a bit washed out at the bright end of the scale. Colors scaled evenly from dark to light on the Color Scales test and there was no noticeable tinting or oversaturation. Small text was sharp and easy to read at 5.3 points (the smallest font on the DisplayMate Scaled Fonts test), and as mentioned above, viewing angle performance was quite good from the sides. There is, however, some color shifting when viewed from the top and bottom angles.
Although the S23A550H lacks the necessary ports to be considered a gaming monitor it does have a speedy 2-millisecond (g-g) pixel response and does a fine job of displaying fast motion sequences. I hooked the monitor up to my PS3 via the HDMI port and fired up the fast action racing game Need for Speed Carbon and did not detect any blurring or ghosting while zipping through the city streets at a high rate of speed. The Cohen Brothers True Grit in HD, streamed via Netflix, looked great on the 23-inch screen, which delivered natural-looking skin tones and crisp colors.
If you're looking for a 23-inch monitor that delivers bold colors and deep blacks, the Samsung SyncMaster S23A550H is right up your alley. You don't get many ports with this model, and its light grayscale performance could be better, but it'll save you a few bucks on your utility bill and bring a touch of style to your desktop. That said, the Editors' Choice Lenovo LS2421p Wide offers equally impressive performance and energy efficiency, comes with a four port USB hub, and gives you a slightly bigger screen. It's around $30 cheaper, too.
