Woman charged with murder in NYC subway death

A woman is reportedly in custody in connection with the death of a man who was struck by an oncoming NYC subway.

By NBC News staff and wire services

NEW YORK?? A 31-year-old Bronx woman was charged Saturday with second-degree murder as a hate crime in the death of a man who was shoved in front of a speeding subway train, New York City authorities said.

Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown identified the woman as Erika Menendez, 31. He said in a statement that she was awaiting arraignment in Queens Criminal Court.

Sunando Sen, a 46-year-old Queens resident who was born in India and ran a printing shop, died Thursday night when a woman who had been muttering to herself on a train platform in Queens suddenly knocked him on the tracks as a train entered the station.

Brown's statement said that Menendez admitted pushing Sen and said she "pushed a Muslim" onto the tracks because she hated Hindus and Muslims ever since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. ?

Brown also said:

"The defendant is accused of committing what is every subway?commuter's worst nightmare - being suddenly and senselessly pushed into the path of an oncoming train.?The victim was allegedly shoved from behind and had no chance to defend himself. Beyond that, the?hateful remarks allegedly made by the defendant and which precipitated the defendant's actions can never?be tolerated by a civilized society."

The woman fled after the attack Thursday. Police released security camera video showing her running from the station.

The attack was the second time this month that someone was pushed to their death in a New York City subway station. A homeless man was arrested in early December and accused of shoving a man in front of a train in Times Square. He is awaiting trial, and claimed he acted in self-defense.

Further details on how police managed to identify the suspect in Sen's death were not immediately available.

Investigators had been following up on tips from people who had seen the security video and were checking homeless shelters and psychiatric units in an attempt to identify the woman.

It was unclear whether she had any connection to Sen. Witnesses told police the two hadn't interacted on the platform as they both waited for the train.

Going Green for a Longer Living Pet - Dog and Cat Vitamins

by Dr. Deva Khalsa on December 29, 2012

Adding a bit of green to your pet?s diet can do as much good for the planet as it can for your dog or cat.? Eating more fresh fruits and vegetables has many heath benefits; one important one being decreasing cancer risk.?? Cats often like cooked asparagus and cantaloupe melon while our easier to please canine friends love everything from a piece of apple to a broccoli stem. Deserving Pets VITAL VITIES has kale, broccoli, beets, carrots, concentrated alfalfa extract, pumpkin, dandelion, and apples.

Create a dog and cat friendly outdoor environment by using natural fertilizers and pest control.? In 2004, the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine linked bladder cancer in Scottish Terriers to exposure to lawn chemicals. Rain creates a mist of these chemicals lingering at just the height of our pets and many pets enjoy chewing on that occasional blade of grass.

?Green? toys accomplish the same goals as more traditional toys, but impact the environment less.?? Non-organic cotton uses more insecticides than any other single major crop.? Many companies now offer pet toys, collars and leashes made from organic cotton, hemp or recycled materials.? They may cost a bit more but you and your pets are caring for the planet.

Believe it or not, 8 billion pounds of cat litter wind up in landfills each year!? Consider litters made from recycled materials such as wood, pine, bark or natural flushable litters from corn and wheat.?? Your cats don?t need to ingest chemical laden scented litter particles as they clean their furry feet. Caring for the planet becomes a winning experience for everyone involved!

01/16/2013 - Ford Policy Union: Pros and cons of free trade

Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, Annenberg Auditorium

Free and open to the public.
Preceded by a reception in the Great Hall at the Ford School at 5:00 PM.

Join the conversation on Twitter: #FordPolicyUnion.

About the event
This Ford Policy Union event will feature a debate on the policy of free trade, which is the elimination of import tariffs and other artificial barriers to international trade. Professor Alan Deardorff, a noted international trade scholar, will argue that the U.S. should actively pursue free trade agreements with any country that is willing, and it should focus those agreements on reducing barriers to international trade rather than on other issues sought by domestic interests in the U.S. Ms. Thea Lee, an expert trade economist, will argue that the current U.S. trade policy and so-called free trade agreements reinforce corporate power structures and exacerbate inequality in the U.S. and abroad.

Speakers
Thea Lee, Deputy Chief of Staff, AFL-CIO
Alan Deardorff, Professor, Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, University of Michigan

More about the Ford Policy Union
The University of Michigan's International Policy Center at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy organizes and hosts the Ford Policy Union, a series of public debate events. The events feature one outside expert; a public policy practitioner, government official, academic and/or an international intellectual; and one U-M faculty member. The two participants present opposing views on a topic and answer questions from the audience.

NHL makes new offer to players

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NHL says it has made a new contract offer to the players in an attempt to end the lockout and save the season.

Deputy commissioner Bill Daly says in a statement Friday that a "comprehensive" proposal was made a day earlier, although he would not discuss details.

He adds that the league is "hopeful" that once the union and its negotiating committee review the proposal "they will share it with the players. We want to be back on the ice as soon as possible."

The lockout is in its 104th day. The NHL says it doesn't want a season of less than 48 games. To make that possible, a deal likely must be reached by mid-January. The sides haven't met face to face since talks with a federal mediator broke down Dec. 13.

OUYA ships 1,200 developer consoles, opens dev portal | Android ...

Begone, doubters. OUYA -- the Android-based game console that shattered about 16 Kickstarter records -- has shipped to developers. Some 1,200 of them have shipped to developers. And it's important to stress that these are for developers. (Did we mention anything about developers here? Because we really should.) As you can see in the video above -- and can the same people who "boxed" a device be the ones to do an unboxing?video? -- these are limited-edition devices, with transparent plastic and bugs and other things that are going to be completely reworked before production units ship in the spring.

What this milestone represents, of course, is a major step forward for a project funded by regular folks -- you and me -- through Kickstarter, meaning it's kind of a crapshoot as to what we'll actually get, when we'll get it, and how good it'll be when it hits our doorstep. (And full disclosure here: Android Central backed OUYA at the $1,337 level, so we've got one of these dev units on the way.) There won't be any apps on this dev version, but the egg has to come before the chicken. Or maybe it's the other way around.

In other news, OUYA?has fired up its developer portal, where you can download the developer kit, upload games and get things ready for launch in a few months. Huzzah!

Steelbridge Capital, Apollo Global JV Buys Miami Office Tower ...

December 27, 2012

By Keith Loria, Contributing Editor

In a joint venture, Steelbridge Capital, a value focused real estate investor based in Miami, and a real estate investment fund managed and advised by affiliates of Apollo Global Real Estate Management, L.P., have acquired Concorde Centre II, a 10-story, 106,500-square-foot office building in Aventura, Fla.

?Office assets rarely trade in Aventura and they are a highly sought-after asset class,? Jay Caplin, Steelbridge Capital?s managing principal, told Commercial Property Executive. ?While Aventura is technically a suburban location, the nature of the area is very urban with a minimal supply of commercial and residential development land.?

The Class B building will be renamed Aventura View and undergo an expansive strategic capital improvement plan, expand property marketing and amenities, and introduce institutional quality property management and leasing.

?While the asset is in good condition and reasonably well leased, Steelbridge saw multiple value creation opportunities by bringing institutional?management?and leasing to the asset,? Caplin said. ?Aventura View?s location, combined with the fact that the average tenant size is smaller and many of the tenants have been at the property for many years,?generally?translates into a higher tenant retention rate.?

Located in the heart of Aventura?s business corridor at 2999 NE 191st St., the transaction marks the largest office purchase in the area in 2012.

Aventura View is?immediately?proximate?and visible to Aventura Mall, one of the top grossing malls in the country, and the area is characterized by dense vertical residential development.

?As a result, the office supply generally has not expanded significantly over multiple development cycles as it has always been very expensive to deliver new office product due to the cost of land,? Caplin said. ?With such strong barriers to entry, as the economy continues to improve and the supply of office product remains relatively constant, demand for office space will be directed to existing properties that are well located and positioned, such as Aventura View.?

Aventura View?is a rare property in that it has been owned by the same?partnership?since it was built in 1988. Steelbridge Capital identified this off-market property and the deal was negotiated principal to principal.

?Steelbridge is a value-oriented investor with a?special expertise in submarkets with high job growth and strong natural barriers to entry,? Caplin added. ?Our program targets the acquisition of real estate where the value has been temporarily discounted due to supply/demand imbalances in real estate capital or market fundamentals and which can be significantly enhanced through redevelopment and repositioning. By implementing a strategic and highly visible marketing campaign, in combination with a capital improvement program, Steelbridge envisions being able to create long -term value at Aventura View.?

It is anticipated that Steelbridge will implement a program that focuses on several major components of the building that will most improve the tenant experience including upgrades to the parking lot, improvements to the lobby and common areas, and some enhancements to the mechanical systems.

'Leaked' BlackBerry 10 info shows video chat and screen sharing in BBM, new task manager

'Leaked' BlackBerry 10 info shows video chat and screen sharing in BBM, new task manager

Top dog at RIM Thorsten Heins heavily implied that video chat would be added to BBM when BlackBerry 10 showed up, and now possible confirmation of the feature has come from what are thought to be leaked presentation slides. Originating on CrackBerry's forums, the images have been taken down on various sites, leading us to believe they're legit and that strongly worded requests have led to their removal. Not only do they suggest BBM video chat is coming to BB10, but also the ability to screen share during these video calls. Another slide details a new task manager for the OS called "BlackBerry Remember," which can sync with Outlook and -- based on its description and what was uncovered in the gold SDK -- may include Evernote integration. We've contacted RIM for comment and will update you with any response, but until then, take a look at the slide above and the pair hidden after the break to assess for yourself whether they're the real deal.

Top 10 open law posts from 2012 | opensource.com

Looking back over the law channel posts of 2012, I was not surprised to see that software patents were a major concern. The high volume of significant patent lawsuits of competitors and rising levels of NPE (aka patent trolls or patent assertion entities) suits has been the subject of both open source community and mainstream media interest.

There were new ideas on patent reform, and an increasing recognition by the public at large that software patents can hinder innovation. We also saw interesting developments in the areas of internet privacy and freedom and copyright law. I'll go out on a limb and make a prediction: there will be more to think about and write about in these areas in 2013.?

Getting into Shapes: From Hyperbolic Geometry to Cube Complexes

A proof announced in March resolved the last of 23 questions about 3D shapes posed in 1982 by mathematician William Thurston, marking the end of an era in the study of "three-manifolds"

hyperbolic geometry Figure 3. When viewed through the lens of hyperbolic geometry, all the fish are the same size. The curves that run along the fishes? spines are hyperbolic straight lines, or "geodesics." Image: Illustration: Douglas Dunham, University of Minnesota Duluth

From Simons Science News (find original story here).

Thirty years ago, the mathematician William Thurston articulated a grand vision: a taxonomy of all possible finite three-dimensional shapes.

Thurston, a Fields medalist who spent much of his career at Princeton and Cornell, had an uncanny ability to imagine the unimaginable: not just the shapes that live inside our ordinary three-dimensional space, but also the far vaster menagerie of shapes that involve such complicated twists and turns that they can only fit into higher-dimensional spaces. Where other mathematicians saw inchoate masses, Thurston saw structure: symmetries, surfaces, relationships between different shapes.

?Many people have an impression, based on years of schooling, that mathematics is an austere and formal subject concerned with complicated and ultimately confusing rules,? he wrote in 2009. ?Good mathematics is quite opposite to this. Mathematics is an art of human understanding. ? Mathematics sings when we feel it in our whole brain.?

At the core of Thurston?s vision was a marriage between two seemingly disparate ways of studying three-dimensional shapes: geometry, the familiar realm of angles, lengths, areas and volumes, and topology, which studies all the properties of a shape that don?t depend on precise geometric measurements ? the properties that remain unchanged if the shape gets stretched and distorted like Silly Putty.

To a topologist, the surface of a frying pan is equivalent to that of a table, a pencil or a soccer ball; the surface of a coffee mug is equivalent to a doughnut surface, or torus. From a topologist?s point of view, the multiplicity of two-dimensional shapes ? that is, surfaces ? essentially boils down to a simple list of categories: sphere-like surfaces, toroidal surfaces, and surfaces like the torus but with more than one hole. (Most of us think of spheres and tori as three-dimensional, but because mathematicians think of them as hollow surfaces, they consider them two-dimensional objects, measured in terms of surface area, not volume.)

Thurston?s key insight was that it is in the union of geometry and topology that three-dimensional shapes, or ?three-manifolds,? can be understood. Just as the topological category of ?two-manifolds? containing the surfaces of a frying pan and a pencil also contains a perfect sphere, Thurston conjectured that many categories of three-manifolds contain one exemplar, a three-manifold whose geometry is so perfect, so uniform, so beautiful that, as Walter Neumann of Columbia University is fond of saying, it ?rings like a bell.? What?s more, Thurston conjectured, shapes that don?t have such an exemplar can be carved up into chunks that do.

In a 1982 paper, Thurston set forth this ?geometrization conjecture? as part of a group of 23 questions about three-manifolds that offered mathematicians a road map toward a thorough understanding of three-dimensional shapes. (His list had 24 questions, but one of them, still unresolved, is more of an intriguing side alley than a main thoroughfare.)

?Thurston had this enormous talent for asking the right questions,? said Vladimir Markovic, a mathematician at the California Institute of Technology. ?Anyone can ask questions, but it?s rare for a question to lead to insight and beauty, the way Thurston?s questions always seemed to do.?

These questions inspired a new generation of mathematicians, dozens of whom chose to pursue their graduate studies under Thurston?s guidance. Thurston?s mathematical ?children? manifest his style, wrote Richard Brown of Johns Hopkins University. ?They seem to see mathematics the way a child views a carnival: full of wonder and joy, fascinated with each new discovery, and simply happy to be a part of the whole scene.?

In the decades after Thurston?s seminal paper appeared, mathematicians followed his road map, motivated less by possible applications than by a realization that three-manifolds occupy a sweet spot in the study of shapes. Two-dimensional shapes are a bit humdrum, easy to visualize and categorize. Four-, five- and higher-dimensional shapes are essentially untamable: the range of possibilities is so enormous that mathematicians have limited their ambitions to understanding specialized subclasses of them. For three-dimensional shapes, by contrast, the structures are mysterious and mind-boggling, but ultimately knowable.

Need a good resolution for 2013? Be a good Mom or Dad and stop hurting your kid

      ?

      ?

      ?

      ?

      ?

      ?

      ?

The most common call I get from people who are looking for an attorney referral goes one of two ways:

      1. ?The mother of my child doesn?t let me see him.? In fact I haven?t seen my kid for six months. She doesn?t like my new girlfriend.? How can I get to see him and have her stop interfering??
      2. ?The father of my child is not involved in her life at all.? He never calls, doesn?t pay child support and has probably come to see her only three times in the last two years even though I told him he could visit with her any time he wants. How do I get him to do more or can I terminate his parental rights??

Whether you have a child from a one night stand or from a long term relationship or anything else, if you are doing what these parents are doing, you are committing child abuse.

I may not be father of the year, but I?m a good Dad.? I?m not even telling people that they need to be good.? Just be average.? But if you are telling your kids how awful your ex is and not letting them see that other parent (and not for safety reasons) then you are committing child abuse.? You are placing your failures on your kids.

If you have a kid, but don?t want one, too bad.? If you can?t find time in your busy schedule to spend one day a week with your child then you too are a child abuser and scum bag.? You are basically telling that child that not only do you not care about them, but you hope that they turn out awfully.

Who do you think you are to screw with a kid like that?? It may be uncomfortable for you to see your ex.? You might hate the new person in their life.? Too bad.? You chose to sleep with them so that child is your responsibility.

And no matter how selfish, self loathing or just plain mean you are, who can?t want the best possible world for their kid.? Children, even in their most frustrating of times are wonderful.? And they are just kids.? But you could ruin them with your actions.

So do the world a favor and be a better person in 2013.? As soon as the kid turns 18 you can blow them off like you want to right now.

      Safe holidays everyone.

The Options Available While Buying Plaster Angle Beads ...

When you go shopping for plaster angle beads you will find that the choices available to you will either be steel or plastic. Depending on the nature of use of the plaster angle beads, you could make your selection as the plaster angle beads of steel are used for exteriors. The metal angle beads have a large variety and you could choose from this exhaustive selection.

However you must remember that the plaster beads of steel may need protective coating. The plaster angle beads made of plastic are more versatile and can be suited for interiors and exteriors. There are a number of beads which are available based on the shape and the purpose for which they are going to be used. You may also chose plaster angle beads made of galvanized steel though this kind will require to be painted adequately with protective coating.

Plaster angle beads of steel, may have to be cut according to the desired size and this can be done using tin snips. Tin snips help to cut neatly thus minimizing the chances of getting the surroundings messy. To cut the plaster angle beads of steel all that you will need to do is to mark the desired length you want.

Thereafter, at the marked point, just bend the plaster angle beads a few times, and it will break easily. Likewise, depending on the nature of plastering that you need to do you may consider buying plaster angle beads of plastic. You would just need to buy the plaster angle beads of the size you want.

Many wholesale dealers sell plaster angle beads instead of ones. Plaster beads can be made to look the same at a much cheaper cost. Thus, the profit of the seller increases with every sale.

Based on the use of the plaster angle beads, you may select their material. This can be illustrated with an example. If you are looking to plaster the corners that need to be resistant to cracks, you may need to consider plaster angle beads made of galvanized steel material. This would again prove that the beads being sold are not filled with recommended as they will require single coat of protective layer, though at times they may need a double coat as well.

Plaster angle beads are specially recommended for corners. These beads are available in an assortment of shapes and sizes if your choice is between steel or other variants of steel. Since the steel material does not require a protective coating, it can be safely used in areas that are susceptible to moisture.

In terms of choice, if you are looking for a smooth finish to the plastering of the walls, plaster angle beads made of zinc or galvanized steel material are strongly recommended. This variety comes in two options, short and expanded form. The expanded form is a more popular choice as it covers a wider area.

These are a few varieties of the material that plaster angle beads that are available in the market, and based on the requirement of the buyer they may make their choice.

You can also find more information on plaster angle beads by visiting http://www.randjbuildershardware.co.uk/plastering/beading.html. RandJbuildershardware is the most trusted and exhaustive source for all your needs of plaster angle beads.

A visit to NORAD's Santa Tracking facility

Few things in this world will reaffirm your holiday spirit faster than watching a dozen or so uniformed service people cover a room in Christmas wrapping. Also on that short list, it so happens, is spotting one of the aforementioned troops hand-feed an overzealous and noticeably plump squirrel who's anxiously scratching on the door to get in. It's a strangely Snow White-esque moment that unfolds minutes after we set up our gear in the conference room of the Leadership Development Center -- a drab, unassuming office space in the middle of Colorado Springs' Peterson Air Force Base that serves as a training facility for 11 months out of the year. But now, in early December, there's a transformation occurring, as men and women in various shades of camouflage paper the space with Christmas spirit in record time.

For one month a year, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) converts this area into holiday central for NORAD's Santa Tracker, a half-century-old program that has become a thing of legend -- a curious juxtaposition of warfare preparedness and storybook magic. It's one that, somehow fittingly, is rooted in a mistake -- a phone number misprinted in a 1955 Sears catalog, prompting local children to call Santa's "private number." Those calls from excited boys and girls were routed, the legend goes, to the big red phone in the war room of NORAD's predecessor, the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD), where quick-thinking Col. Harry Shoup asked his troops to play along. Now, 57 years later, it's a massive undertaking, as volunteers in military garb and Santa hats answer calls from children in hundreds of countries.

Customer Service Essential for Small to Medium Businesses ...

Smaller businesses don?t always have the resources for quick-response and automated customer service, but because they?re not gigantic conglomerates, consumers still expect the same speed and quality of service ? perhaps even more than they do of larger companies. In the age of social media and technology advancements, it?s easy to lose track of the customer service essentials SMBs need to maintain to stay relevant.

      How does your website look?
A recent?Forbes Magazine article?noted that in their attempts to stay relevant in sales, SMBs often lose sight of their websites. Try walking through your website from the perspective of someone who?s never heard of your company before. Ask yourself: Is my website user friendly and modern looking and will it make customers visit more than once? You want your customers to frequent your website often and have a positive experience with it. Resources and support links should be easy for them to find, and pages should navigate organically to and from each other.

Forbes analysis reads: ?As sales move to digital, the web site drives higher customer value and loyalty. Just as importantly, it lowers interaction costs ? critical for winning in the SMB market where the small size of each individual customer requires a nimble interaction model to capture any margin.?

Do you have a social channel for your customers?

Social media customer relationship management (social CRM) is expected to be a billion dollar industry and is quickly being adapted into sales strategies and best practices. If you haven?t already, create a twitter handle for your support team. Monitor it weekly, if not daily, to engage with customers, promote deals and monitor customer service issues. Virgin Atlantic, for example, has set up a system that allows flyers to Tweet them for flight status updates.?http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/en/gb/bookflightsandmore/innovationzone/virginfamily/twitterstatus.jsp 0 People want their businesses to be as interactive as they are, which means you should develop social media strategies for your customer support as soon as possible. Don?t look at it as a nuisance, either.?Social CRM apps, which allow you to better track your customers online behavior, increase productivity among your sales team by about 25 percent.

      How are you following up?
You absolutely should not leave your customers high and dry after you?ve won them. This isn?t Boiler Room. Refocus your SMB sales team commitment so every rep follows up with every customer post-sale in search of renewals and upsells. Ask them how their experience with your company went and encourage them to come back. To increase your chances of renewals, consider offering discounts to entice them to come back.

You should also fall back on your strong website and social media presence when chasing renewals. Once they purchase a product, make sure your website offers tips for using that product and recommends similar products they haven?t bought. Also engage with them via a tweet, for example, if they?ve found your business through a social media site. Customers are more inclined to come back to a business that can prove its run by humans and not automated, spam-like virtual salesmen.

Use the "4 S's" to Become a Wine Connoisseur

Use the "4 S's" to Become a Wine ConnoisseurIf you're hosting a holiday party this week, wine is probably a factor. And if you're not an expert, choosing the right bottle for your occasion and budget can be overwhelming. Here, LearnVest's Gabrielle Karol explains how to use the "4 S's" to up your wine game and impress your guests.

What's the difference between Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio, anyway? (Answer: They're made from the same grape, but Pinot Gris is produced in France, while Pinot Grigio derives from Italy.) And is it really possible to pick out an affordable bottle of wine that doesn't taste, well?cheap? We turned to an expert for the best advice: Leslie Sbrocco, author of The Simple & Savvy Wine Guide: Buying, Pairing and Sharing for All. Sbrocco walked us through the "4 S's" of wine tasting and how to get great value at the wine store.

The 4 S's: Seeing, Swirling, Smelling and Sipping

"The most important way to learn about wine is to taste as much of it as possible," says Sbrocco. But you can't just drink a bottle of wine each night and expect to breeze your way through a conversation with a sommelier. That's where the "4 S's" come in. By breaking up the tasting process into four components?seeing, swirling, smelling, and sipping?you'll start to properly identify the different components of a wine. This will help you to eventually figure out your personal tastes, as well as what to look for when choosing a wine.

      Step 1: Seeing

Once you've poured your wine into a clear glass, examine the color. As a general rule, white wine will be darker if it's older, while red wine will be lighter if it's aged for a longer period of time. The color can also tell you about the process used to make the wine: Chardonnay, for instance, will be golden due to its aging process, which typically occurs in oak barrels.

      Step 2: Swirling

Move the wine around the glass gently, aiming to coat the sides of the cup. This will release the aromatics of the wine, which will help you to better identify scents.

      Step 3: Smelling

"If initially you simply smell ?red' or ?white,' that's fine!" say Sbrocco. Keep sniffing in order to identify the following scents:

If it's a white wine, see if you can identify citrus notes, like grapefruit, lemon, and lime; or ripe, tropical fruits, such as pineapple or melon. Cooler places will generally produce more citrusy or tangy-smelling wines, while ripe smells indicate warmer locales. Additionally, some white wines may produce aromas of vanilla or oak.

If it's a red wine, most red wines will either have red berry scents, like cherry and strawberry, or darker, riper smells, including blackberry and plum. Wines produced in cooler places will tend toward the red berry side of the spectrum, while warmer locations will lend themselves to a darker, riper scent. Red wines can also have earthier aromas, like coffee, smoke, or chocolate.

      Step 4: Sipping

When you take your first sip, what you taste is a combination of the actual flavors of the wine, as well as the scent because taste is heavily influenced by smell.

"The first question to ask yourself: Do you like it? Or do you not like it?" says Sbrocco. Then try to identify the different flavors you've smelled, along with characteristics such as sweetness, tanginess, and alcohol content.

How to Put Those "4 S's" to Good Use

The information derived from the process of seeing, swirling, smelling, and sipping is most helpful if it's documented. By recording your thoughts on the wine you've sampled, you'll start to identify patterns in wines you've enjoyed?and ones that have missed the mark.

Sbrocco herself takes photos of wines she's tried on her smartphone, and then she sends herself an email with additional notes. You can try an app like Hello Vino, which lets you take a photo of the bottle and add such information as year, price, rating, sweetness, smell, and alcohol content.

So now that you know why trying as many wines as possible is so important, the next question is: What's the most cost-effective way to taste-test new bottles?

"Many wine shops have free tastings," says Sbrocco. "This is a great way to try new bottles, and learn from professionals with a lot of experience."

Another fun idea is to form your own tasting group?if everyone brings a bottle, you can try a number of different wines and compare notes. "Organize monthly tastings around themes," says Sbrocco. "You can make it as broad as ?red wine' or you can go more specific, like ?wines from California.'"

They key is to sample different varieties of reds and whites from varied countries. Sbrocco recommends the following picks, which encompass a spectrum of flavors, from light and juicy to full-bodied and heavy.

Use the "4 S's" to Become a Wine Connoisseur

To get you started with some affordable picks, Sbrocco has selected five of her recent favorites, including two bonus sparkling wines:

2011 Gainey "Limited Selection" Riesling, Santa Ynez Valley, California?$15
2011 Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Villages, Beaujolais, France?$12
2010 Concha y Toro "Casillero Del Diablo," Carmenere, Chile?$10
Segura Viudas Brut Reserva, Cava, Spain?$10
2011 Medici Ermete "Concerto," Lambrusco, Italy?$11

Why You Need to Keep an Open Mind About Wine

Sbrocco's final piece of advice: Don't get too hung up on how long a wine has been aged or whether it has a screw top.

"When it comes to white wine, it can be produced very quickly?I just tried a great bottle from 2012. You won't see good reds quite as quickly, but there are definitely solid options from 2011, 2010 and 2009," says Sbrocco. "A lot of reds will benefit from more age, but there's no hard and fast rule. Sure, you can age a California Cabernet for 25 years, but it could be just as good?if not better?after 10."

And skeptics needn't be put off by screw tops, she says. "The container doesn't predict the quality of the wine. There are fantastic wines that come with screw tops, and bad wines with corks."

Sbrocco is also a huge fan of the recent resurgence of boxed wines: "The value is tremendous?a 3-liter box is equivalent to four bottles of wine. At $25-35 a box, that comes to $6 per bottle. Plus, the technology helps the wine stay fresh for months."

Luckily, it's clear that becoming a wine connoisseur doesn't necessarily depend on spending a ton of money?it really comes down to paying attention (and drinking more)!

SSGT Zoltan Dobovich, an Allentown native, was one of eight men who were killed while on board a B-17G Flying Fortress back on Nov. 1, 1946.

      By David Chang, NBC10

It's a journey over six decades in the making. But 66 years after his death, a World War II army staff sergeant is finally returning home.

SSGT Zoltan Dobovich, an Allentown native, was one of eight men who were killed while on board a B-17G Flying Fortress back on November 1, 1946. The heavy bomber aircraft was flying from Naples, Italy to Bovingdon, England when it crashed into the French Alps. He was 21-years-old.

After the fatal accident, several attempts were made to locate the men. While some initial remains were recovered in 1947, none of the soldiers were individually identified. The recovered remains were buried in a single grave at the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Between 1972 and 1975 as well as 1979, more remains were recovered at the crash site, primarily by Italian military authorities, but were still unidentified.

      Read more at NBCPhiladelphia.com

Finally, in 1983, Italian military personnel recovered more remains from the site and were able to identify Dobovich through DNA testing.

Dobovich?s remains will be flown in, with an honor escort, from an Air Force base in Hawaii to Philadelphia International Airport on Christmas Eve, according to the Burlington County Times. The remains will then be taken to Perinchief Chapels, on 838 High Street in Mount Holly, NJ. A funeral service for Dobovich will be held Thursday, at 11 a.m., at Perinchief Chapels. Interment and military honors will then take place at the Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in North Hanover Township, NJ.

Dobovich is survived by a niece and two nephews. The Burlington County Times reports Dobovich was a radio operator who enlisted in the Army two years after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Obama starts Hawaiian vacation, leaving Washington on ice

KAILUA, Hawaii (Reuters) - Taking what promised to be a very brief Christmas break from the ongoing struggle to avoid the "fiscal cliff" of tax hikes and spending cuts, President Barack Obama relaxed with his family on Saturday at a beach retreat in Hawaii.

Congress was to return to Washington next Thursday and Obama has pledged to work with lawmakers to strike a deal to avoid the economic shock from tax and spending measures set to take effect on January 1 if a deal can't be reached, which many economists say could push the U.S. economy back into recession.

The president is expected to indulge in some of his favorite pastimes on the island where he was born and raised: golf, an expedition for the local treat "shave ice," and an evening out with family and friends. He hit the links at the nearby Marine Corps base under sunny skies on Saturday afternoon.

On Sunday, he is expected to attend funeral services for Senator Daniel Inouye, the long-serving Democrat from Hawaii who died on Monday, but the president has no other public events on his schedule.

On Saturday, Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he had urged Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie, a Democrat, to name Inouye's successor "with due haste."

"It is critically important to ensure that the people of Hawaii are fully represented in the pivotal decisions the Senate will be making before the end of the year," Reid, of Nevada, said in a statement.

Obama's idyll was not expected to last more than four days, and he will likely retrace the more than 4,800-mile trip from the Aloha State to Washington after Christmas in a bid to cut a deal with Republicans, who failed on Thursday to agree on competing tax and spending bills of their own.

Before leaving Washington on Friday evening, Obama urged Congress to come up with a stopgap measure to spare the U.S. economy the jolt of $600 billion in tax increases and spending cuts economists say would likely derail the economy.

The president asked lawmakers for a stripped-down deal to continue lower tax rates on middle income earners and extend unemployment insurance benefits to avoid some of the worst effects of the "fiscal cliff" in the new year.

Obama's family holiday, in a quiet beach front community on the other side of the island from bustling Honolulu, should also provide some respite from the somber focus on the Newtown, Connecticut, school massacre and the consequent bitter debate over measures to change America's gun culture and prevent violence.

The president's weekly radio and Internet addresses, which in recent weeks have centered on his argument for extending tax cuts for all but the wealthiest Americans, on Saturday offered holiday greetings to U.S. military forces.

Have Yourself a Thrifty Little Christmas - More Dollars at Home

Christmas is a time of joy and family and celebration. It?s also a time when many households haemorrhage money. Instead of subscribing to the modern notion that the Christmas spirit can be bought, try taking a deep breath and getting back to basics this year to save money and keep the stress of financial worries from ruining this special season.

      Decorations

Nothing says you have to keep up with the Griswolds by creating an animatronic, visible-from-space light display in your yard every year. Not only are twinkle lights expensive, they can really run up your electric bill. Try hanging just one strand over your door to welcome guests, and take a winter walk through the neighborhood to enjoy other people?s light displays with your family. Light-looking and a cup of hot cocoa make for an inexpensive way to create some special memories and get into the holiday spirit.

When it comes to the rest of your decorating, remember that nowhere in the Bible does it say that the interior of a good Christian?s home must resemble a department store window display every Christmas. Save money on inside decorations by making your own. Construction paper crafts are inexpensive and fun for the kids. Adults can take things one step further and try some elaborate origami. Instead of rushing to the craft shop to buy expensive supplies, repurpose household items like jar lids and bottle caps to make interesting ornaments, and use images from last year?s greeting cards or wrapping paper in your arts and crafts. A Christmas tree trimmed in homemade ornaments and paper chains is absolutely heart-warming.

      Gifts

A gift is no fun to give when you?re wondering how you?re going to pay for it when the credit card bills roll in. Try making your own gifts this year for a surprise your loved ones will really appreciate. If you love crafts, create something beautiful for your relatives? homes. Bake friends their favorite holiday treats, or try making your own coupon books containing certificates for things like a girls? night in or free babysitting. Kids like to get coupons, too, especially ones they can cash in for extra privileges like staying up late on a weekend or watching a few extra hours of television.

      Food

It just isn?t a holiday party without delicious food, but that doesn?t mean you have to break the bank to serve a five-course dinner. Why don?t you try a pot-luck style gathering this year and ask guests to bring a side dish or a dessert to share? Or, instead of a meal, time your party so that only drinks and hors d?oeuvres are required. Consider hosting a Christmas brunch instead of a Christmas dinner, because eggs are definitely cheaper than whole turkeys and hams, and remember that many grocery chains run promotions at this time of year so that with your store loyalty card or some coupons, you can get everything you need at a discount if you plan your menu in advance and shop ahead. If you do serve a big dinner, go with a buffet, which cuts down on wasted food that?s plated but not eaten. You might just have leftovers enough to get you through New Year?s.

Car thieves offer a reprieve on Christmas Day

      3 hrs.

The holidays may be a time to spread joy, but be careful not to let a car thief sour your good cheer.

A new study ranks the final week of the year as one of the riskiest when it comes to getting your car stolen. But the good news is that even the bad guys seem to take a break on Christmas Day.

Among 11 major holidays (OK, an even dozen if you include Groundhog Day), the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICD) reveals Christmas landed last in terms of the total number of vehicles stolen in the U.S. in 2011, at 1,347.?

In fact, Christmas had the lowest rate of car theft of any day in 2011, holiday or not.? Groundhog Day, at 1,491, was second-lowest holiday.

Apparently, all those tricksters were helping themselves to some expensive treats on Halloween, which ranked No. 1 on the list with 2,328 vehicles stolen.

Close behind, however, was New Year?s Day, at 2,286, followed by Memorial Day, at 2,005, and Labor Day, at 1,977.

But the study can be a bit misleading.? Fifth on the list is New Year?s Eve, with 1,947 stolen vehicles.? So, if you consider the build-up to the dropping ball and the day of hangovers to follow as one continuous holiday, suddenly New Year?s takes the lead by a wide margin, at 4,233.

And, by the same logic, Christmas suddenly becomes a much less?bucolic holiday.? The folks at the NICD rank Christmas Eve ninth among the 11 major holidays, with a reported 1,797 vehicles stolen in 2011. ?If you combine them together, the total suddenly jumps to 3,144, just behind New Year?s.

Why might there be more thefts on Christmas Eve? ?It may be that thieves?expect to find more gifts in the cars they steal as folks head over to visit family and friends ? or race to buy last-minute gifts.

?Although the nation has enjoyed declining vehicle thefts for eight consecutive years, the risk from vehicle theft is still very real. There is always a black market for items obtained by theft, and vehicles remain popular theft targets,? says the new holiday report.

How do the holidays stack up from a theft perspective? Here?s the list:

      1. Halloween (2,328)

      2. New Year?s Day (2,286)

      3. Memorial Day (2,005)

      4. Labor Day (1,977)

      5. New Year?s Eve (1,947)

      6. Valentine?s Day (1,895)

      7. Independence Day (1,862)

      8. President?s Day (1,830)

      9. Christmas Eve (1,797)

      10. Thanksgiving (1,526)?

      11. Groundhog Day (1,491)?

      12. Christmas Day (1,347)

Many injured in Egypt clashes as police fire tear gas

Confrontations broke out in Egypt's second largest city, Alexandria on the eve of the second leg of voting on the country's contentious constitution. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

By NBC News staff and wire services

ALEXANDRIA, Egypt ? Supporters of President Mohammed Morsi and his opponents hurled rocks at each other in Egypt's second city on the eve of a final vote on a new constitution shaped by Islamists.

Police fired tear gas as scores of opponents of the constitution and thousands of Islamists hurled rocks across a security cordon separating them near a mosque in Alexandria that was the focus for violence last week.

"God is great," Islamists chanted when the clash began.

The Egyptian Ministry of Health said at least 55 people were injured in the clashes near the al-Qaid Ibrahim mosque in Alexandria, state media reported.

The Islamists had gathered in support of an Islamic vision of Egypt's future a day before a second round of voting in a referendum on the basic law. Opposition supporters had also turned out as worshipers assembled for Friday prayers.

Morsi and his Islamist allies back the draft constitution as a vital step in Egypt's transition to democracy almost two years after the fall of Hosni Mubarak.

The opposition says the draft, drawn up by an Islamist-dominated assembly, is a recipe for deepening divisions and more violence.

The Muslim Brotherhood called for the mass gathering in Alexandria to protest after a violent confrontation between Islamists and the liberal, secular opposition last week ended with a Muslim preacher besieged inside his mosque for 14 hours.

Rival factions had used clubs, knives and swords last week, but this time police kept the feuding sides apart, although witnesses saw several protesters and one police officer being helped away. Some protesters had head wounds.

The run-up to the final round of voting Saturday on a new constitution has been marked by often violent protests that have cost at least eight lives. The first round on Dec. 15 produced a yes vote that is expected to be repeated in the second round.

Lines of riot police cordoned off Alexandria's al-Qaid Ibrahim mosque, scene of last week's violence. Islamists chanted pro-Islamic slogans while a smaller group of opponents gathered nearby, chanting against Morsi, propelled to power in a June election by the Muslim Brotherhood.

Analysis: Egypt is rapidly approaching its own 'cliff'

"The people want the implementation of Shariah," the Islamist sympathizers shouted, in a show of support for Islamic law. "Our souls and blood, we sacrifice to Islam," they shouted.

In one incident, an Islamist filming anti-Morsi protesters was grabbed and roughed up. Islamists on the other side of a security cordon pushed and shoved police trying to reach him.

The opposition, facing defeat in the referendum, has called for a no vote against a document it says is too Islamist and ignores the rights of women and minorities, including the 10 percent of Egyptians who are Christian.

Some gun-control advocates target ammo clips

Ron Moon, co-owner of CJI Guns in Tucker, Ga., holds a pair of 100-bullet-capacity magazines for an AR15 assault style semi-automatic rifle on Wednesday.

By Bill Briggs, NBC News contributor

Anticipating staunch resistance from gun-rights groups to any effort to ban assault-style rifles, some pro-gun control lawmakers are instead trying to leverage the national outrage over the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., to enact federal legislation outlawing high-capacity ammunition clips.

House Democrats, emboldened by President Barack Obama's call Wednesday for quick, "concrete? proposals to curb gun violence, are pushing House Republicans to quickly consider?a ban on high-capacity clips.

The move follows the massacre of 20 schoolchildren and six adults on Dec. 14 at Sandy Hook Elementary school. The gunman, 20-year-old Adam Lanza carried three guns, primarily using a Bushmaster?XM-15 ? an AR-15/M4-type rifle --?which police said was fed by 30-round magazines. He also was armed with a Glock 10mm handgun and Sig Sauer 9mm handgun. Although authorities didn't reveal the models of those weapons, both of those handguns allow high-capacity clips -- including 15-round magazines for one model of 10mm handgun that's sold by Glock. ?

The bill?s list of co-sponsors this week grew from 113 to 135, according to a spokesman for Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-N.Y., the measure?s author. In 1993, a man armed with a gun and several 15-round magazines shot and killed McCarthy?s husband, Dennis, aboard a Long Island, N.Y., commuter train. Five others also died and 25 were wounded.?

?We've been here before,? McCarty said Wednesday on Capitol Hill. ?All too often, we see these mass killings and yet all our lives go on. Everybody is asking: Is this time different? It is ... This time is different because there is so much anger.?

?We can get the job done,? added House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., one of the bill?s co-sponsors. In an interview Tuesday with NBC?s Andrea Mitchell, Pelosi predicted: ?Right away we could pass ... the ban on the assault magazine.?

Obama demands 'concrete proposals' on gun violence by January

In the other house of Congress, Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., is simultaneously pushing for a rapid vote on his almost identical proposal to outlaw the possession, import or sale of any ammunition clip that hold more than 10 rounds, saying: ?These high-capacity magazines, which were used in Newtown, Aurora, Tucson, Virginia Tech and so many other tragedies, were designed for one purpose only ? to shoot and kill quickly.?

From 1994 to 2004, high-capacity ammunition magazines were illegal as part of the Federal Assault Weapons Ban, but that provision lapsed when the legislation expired. Congressional Democrats have made several attempts to similar legislation barring possession of rapid-fire assault-style weapons since then, but those efforts have failed.

Legislators also have pushed legislation banning specific types of bullets ? with one notable success:?In 1986, President Ronald Reagan signed legislation that outlawed armor-piercing "cop-killer" bullets.?

But other recent ammunition-cutting proposals have failed to gain traction in Congress. Last summer, a bill filed Lautenberg and McCarthy sought to significantly curb the ability of Americans to buy unlimited amounts of ammunition via the Internet. That bill never made it beyond the Senate Judiciary Committee, a spokeswoman for Lautenberg said this week. ??

So in a country where the right to bear arms is held sacred, firearm foes are refining their pitch to focus on the delivery mechanism. One of their main talking points is asking why such high-capacity clips are necessary.

?I've been a hunter all my life, and there's no reason to have a magazine that holds 30 shells,? said Rep. Mike Thompson, D-Calif. ?Call it what it is: an assault magazine. And we don't have any reason to assault anyone in our communities, in our neighborhoods. ... Why do you need 30 shells in a magazine?"

?Who needs these? The answer is sports shooters,? responds Mark Walters, co-author of "Lessons from Armed America"?and host of a syndicated radio show ?Armed American Radio." ?For example, if you were target shooting or practicing for an upcoming (shooting competition), it?s nice not to have to change magazines on a regular continual basis."

In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the National Rifle Association held a news conference in Washington, D.C, on Friday and blamed the media and video games for cultivating a culture of violence.

What?s more, many ranchers use firearms like AR15s ? manufactured to carry 30-round magazines???to protect their herds from coyotes and clear their land of prairie dogs, added George Hill, an employee at Basin Sports in Vernal, Utah.

The talk of banning ?assault magazines? emanating from Washington appears to be driving sales of the high-capacity clips, according to Walters and Hill.

??I came in at 8 this morning and I have been non-stop on selling AR15s and ammo. Nonstop,? Hill said Wednesday afternoon. ?Those (30-round clips) have been going out, and I?ve been selling those two, three, 10 at a time. Everybody?s worried about the politics behind it and that?s generating a lot of these sales. They?re worried about it being banned.

?I would be real happy to only sell Benelli goose-hunting guns and Browning deer rifles. And that?s normally what we sell this time of year. But the politics has super-heated the tactical market. Normally, I sell somebody 50 rounds, maybe 100 pounds. Instead, I?m selling them 500 or 1,000 rounds.?

While Walters and Hill each oppose the proposed ban on high-capacity clips in principle, they argued as well that such a crackdown won?t slow gun violence in this country.

?This is all symbolic legislation that will do nothing. Absolutely nothing. If I could say something different, I would admit that,? Walters said. ?But the facts don?t bear that out. It?s just feel-good legislation being backed into a horrible event.?

They note that gun ownership has increased over the past decade, with the number of instant criminal background checks conducted by retailers required by federal law rising each year. In November alone, more than 2 million such point-of-sale investigations were performed nationally on people seeking to purchase firearms???the most in any single month since federal officials launched the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) in 1998, according to the FBI. By comparison, gun retailers and federal authorities completed 842,932 background checks in November 2003.

?There are millions of rounds of ammunition already in the public?s hands???high-capacity or standard-capacity magazines already in the public's hands,? Walters said. ?If they pass this ban, in the days prior to the date (it goes into effect), stores will sell 10 years? worth of these capacity magazines.

?But beyond that, it?s irrelevant. A seasoned, experienced firearms enthusiast, including myself, can change a magazine out, including a tactical reload, in under a second,? Walters said.

Moreover, such ammunition doesn?t degrade over time, he added.

?It?s a plastic magazine with a spring. Magpul (based in Erie, Colo.) makes the most popular 30-round magazines, PMAGs, which are selling for $13.99,? Walters said. ?I have five of them being reserved at my store because they?re selling like crazy. I know I could keep them in my safe forever. I can open it in 20 years, take it out of the plastic bag, and if I want to use it, I can use it.?

Any federal ammo ban???or mandated purchase limits on certain clips or bullets???would simply create an ?underground market,? Hill said. Today, scores of gun enthusiasts???including many hunters???make their own bullets as a hobby. They?re called ?reloaders.?

?People have been making ammunition themselves since the 1880s. That?s something anybody is capable of doing with a little bit of know-how,? Hill said. "Those kinds of bans are like throwing a steak on the grill for like 10 seconds and calling it cooked. It just looks like it?s cooked but it?s not.

?You can reload. Or, you can order online and get stuff from outside the U.S. It?s too late for any of that,? Hill said. ?And it never works.?
