Android 102: Wireless file transfer

Wifi File Explorer

I use Linux for my PC operating system. That means I don't get any fancy Android File Transfer programs to use to copy files on and off of my devices, and setting up MTP support is a hassle -- not to mention the closed nature of the whole mess. I can use the command line and adb to copy files back and forth, and sometimes I do, but the easy way is to use an app that acts as a remote server and "browse" my files with Chromium or Firefox. They also work with Windows or Mac OS for those times when you don't want to look for a cable.

There are plenty of apps available that will work. Airdroid is a pretty popular one that also offers the ability to send and receive SMS message through your PC. It's also free, and free is always good. I like things a bit more lightweight and simple, so I use Wifi File Explorer Pro. It's not free ($0.99) and doesn't let you text from your PC. It's just the first one that was made available and I hate change. My point is, there's plenty of apps that will work, and they all work basically the same.

  1. Grab the app from Google Play, install it, and run it.
  2. The app will tell you a URL to put in your browser. You may need a code or need to scan a barcode to log in.
  3. When the page loads, you see everything that's on your phone storage, and can transfer files both ways, or play music or video.

The apps are actually running a tiny web server on your phone, so the result acts like a website. You will need to have both machines on the same Wifi, and in theory a cable is faster, but wireless file transfer is pretty darn easy.

Defining career paths in health systems improvement

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? The sheer number of efforts aimed at improving the quality and efficiency of the U.S. health care system -- ranging from portions of the national Affordable Care Act to local programs at individual hospitals and practices -- reflects the urgency and importance of the task. One aspect that has received inadequate attention, according to three physicians writing in the January 2013 issue of Academic Medicine, is training the next generation of experts needed to help lead these efforts. In their Perspective article, which has been released online, the authors propose a framework for career development in what they call "health systems improvement," a term that encompasses a broad range of activities -- including management, research and public policy -- to improve the quality and efficiency of our systems of care.

"My co-authors and I each had experience in nonclinical fields such as government, consulting or law before entering medical school, leading to countless conversations with our classmates and co-residents about atypical career paths," explains Clay Ackerly, MD, MSc, management and policy fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization, a co-author of the Academic Medicine article. "During these conversations most trainees echoed common themes of wanting to have careers that allow them to improve the quality of our care delivery systems. However, most of them also had difficulty articulating their exact interests, and it became clear that we lacked a common lexicon to discuss their specific interests and potential career opportunities."

The authors -- also including Ami Parekh, MD, JD, medical director of Health Systems and Innovation at the University of California, San Francisco, and Daniel Stein, MD, senior medical resident at Brigham and Woman's Hospital -- write that while a few academic medical centers have developed programs addressing health systems improvement, many medical trainees "may become overwhelmed by the sheer number of, and lack of clarity among, possible career paths." Since many of today's health care leaders reached their current positions through what the authors call "circuitous and often serendipitous career paths," their ability to guide and advise young physicians may be limited.

Based on a series of conversations with medical students, residents and leaders in health systems improvement, the authors put together their framework. It starts with three core focus areas -- research, policy and management -- defines three intersections -- policy advising, policy translation, and implementation science -- and includes examples of potential careers, such as academic administration, health services research and government relations.

"The framework is largely a collection of definitions -- a new taxonomy, if you will -- and while some may disagree with the dividing lines, we wanted to put some structure around the passion so many trainees feel for improving the care of patients," Ackerly explains. "We hope this framework can help anyone with that passion -- from any background, not just MDs -- find productive ways to develop their interest and have an impact."

Ackerly and his co-authors suggest that trainees interested in careers in health systems improvement take a few simple steps to help guide their early career development. Some are as basic as reflecting on their own preferences, including whether they want to practice clinically, and identifying one core area on which to focus, as well as one to deemphasize. Trainees may also consider the possibility of additional formal training -- such as research fellowships or advanced degrees in public health, business, health administration or public policy. Noting that their proposed framework needs validation, the authors plan to monitor how it is used by both trainees and their mentors, refine their recommendations, and expand the examples of career options included in the paper.

"We need to bring as much talent as possible into this field. But until we have better defined career paths for trainees who want to engage in this work, many of them may become, at best, confused and, at worst, demoralized," Ackerly stresses. "We hope that making those career paths more explicit will lead to an energized workforce and will attract the needed institutional investments in time and resources. The struggle to improve the quality of health care should never end -- patients deserve nothing less."

Apple overcomes last hurdle, iPhone 5 cleared for sale in China as Android continues to dominate

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Honda Motor Co introduced its redesigned Civic sedan only a year-and-a-half after a major model change of the best-selling compact car in the United States. Even Honda admits that the 2012 Civic, introduced in the spring of 2011, missed the mark. For a company that prides itself on rock-solid reliability, it was a shock last summer when influential Consumer Reports ranked the Civic dead last in a field of 12 compact sedans it tested. Sales of the new Civic, a 2013 model, will start this week and the refreshed car was shown off on Thursday at the LA Auto Show. ...

Timer 2.0 brings same great timers, new great expansion options

Timer 2.0 brings same great timers, new great expansion options

Timer by App Cubby launched as an inexpensive way to quickly and easily set single or multiple count-down timers on the iPhone. Since Apple's built-in Clock app only allows for a single timer at once, Timer was well worth the $0.99 it originally cost. Recently, however, App Cubby made it free. And now they're further upping the ante with Timer 2.0. It's still free, but the new version comes with the option to add even more features via in-app purchase.

Thanks to the iPhone 5 and iPod touch 5 16:9 display, you still get the same 12 pre-set timers, as well as 2 customizable timers. Any of them, and all of them, available at the tap of a button.

Among the options for Timer 2.0 are theme packs at $0.99 each, including anodyne, halcyon, dulcet, incandescent, brazen, clicky, midnight, glimmer, and gallery. Sound packs, also at $0.99 each, include serene, nature, and future. The glyph pack is $1.99 and includes 400 symbols to use in your timer labels. If a la carte feels too expensive or too involved, you can also pick up all sound bundles for only $1.99, all themes for only $4.99, or the ultimate bundle for only $9.99. And bundles include not only current content, but future content as well. Buying any of the in-app purchases also removes the ad (an icon, middle bottom, that suggests other apps you might like to try).

The free version of Timer, without a single in-app purchase, is fully functional. The in-app purchases are just icing on the cake -- a way to liven up the app after having used it for a while, and to tip the developers for a job well done.

Timer 2.0 is a great app and an interesting App Store experiment. It lets users try before they buy, removing the fear of purchasing, and still gives them an option to pay real money to support the developer and ensure work on the app continues.

I had a chance to talk to David Barnard, App Cubby's producer, about all the work and the thought process that went into making Timer 2.0, and into how to best sell it on the App Store. If you're interested in development and the App Store economy, it's a must-listen:

Download MP3

Timer 2.0 is available now on the App Store at the low, low price of free. Give it a try.

Rival Palestinian groups show support for UN bid

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel's leader, having failed to block the Palestinians from taking their quest for a state to the U.N., defiantly declared Thursday that they would have to back down from long-held positions if they ever hope to gain independence.

Ahead of Thursday's vote, thousands of Palestinians from rival factions celebrated in the streets of the West Bank. In a departure from previous opposition, the Hamas militant group, which rules the Gaza Strip, said it wouldn't interfere with the U.N. bid, and its supporters joined some of the celebrations.

Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas turned to the United Nations after four years of deadlock in Mideast peace efforts. While the initiative, all but certain to pass, will not immediately bring about independence, Palestinians hope the strong international endorsement will give them more leverage in future negotiations with Israel.

Speaking to reporters in New York, Abbas said diplomatic pressure to abandon the initiative was "tremendous," but that he would not be deterred.

"We said our word, and the vote will take place," he said.

The Palestinians' jubilant mood contrasted sharply with Israel's weak diplomatic position at the world body.

Intense U.S. efforts failed to sway the Palestinians from going ahead with their plan. And one by one, European allies, including heavyweights like France, rejected Israeli appeals to oppose the Palestinian resolution. Germany, a close ally of Israel, said it will abstain.

The resolution calls for a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, territories Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast war. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected a pullback to the 1967 lines, saying it would threaten Israeli security. Israeli settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem are now home to some 500,000 Israelis.

Netanyahu warned the Palestinians on Thursday that they would not win their hoped-for state until they recognize Israel as the Jewish homeland, declare an end to their conflict with Israel and agree to security arrangements that will protect Israel.

"The resolution in the U.N. today won't change anything on the ground," Netanyahu declared. "It won't advance the establishment of a Palestinian state, but rather, put it further off."

The Palestinians have resisted demands to recognize Israel as the Jewish homeland, saying it would undermine the claims of Palestinian refugees and their millions of descendants scattered across the world.

Israel says Palestinian demands for refugees to return to what is now Israel is an illegitimate attempt to undermine the Jewish character of their state. Instead, Israel says refugees should be resettled in a future Palestine alongside Israel.

The Palestinians have turned to the U.N. in frustration with nearly 20 years of negotiations have that have foundered under the weight of mutual violence, intransigence and failure of will.

Last year, they sought full-fledged membership in the U.N. but failed to muster Security Council support. This year, they set their sights lower, to a lesser status of non-member state, but are assured of approval in the sympathetic General Assembly.

The date they chose is emotionally charged. On Nov. 29, 1947, the U.N. decided to partition what was then British-ruled Palestine into Jewish and Arab states. Jewish leaders accepted the plan, but Arabs rejected it, and the Palestinians were left without a state.

General Assembly recognition on Thursday of Palestine will not actually deliver a state, end the Israeli occupation or reunify the Palestinians, who are ruled by dueling governments in the West Bank and Gaza.

But the Palestinians hope U.N. recognition will add weight to their claims.

Israel, like the U.S., argues that the Palestinians can win a state only through negotiations, and both countries mounted an aggressive campaign to try to head off the General Assembly vote.

"The path to a two-state solution that fulfills the aspirations of the Palestinian people is through Jerusalem and Ramallah (in the West Bank), not New York," U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton told reporters on Wednesday.

In a last-ditch move Wednesday, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns promised Abbas that President Barack Obama would re-engage as a mediator in 2013 if the Palestinian leader abandoned the statehood effort. Abbas refused.

The U.N. bid is crucial to maintaining his leadership. The Islamic militant Hamas group's standing in the Arab world has risen as changes sweep the Mideast, while Abbas' Fatah movement, which governs the West Bank, has been sidelined and marginalized, in large part because of his failure to deliver a state through diplomacy. Hamas got a major boost earlier this month, claiming victory after battling Israel in eight days of hostilities that ended with an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire.

The rival Palestinian governments emerged after Hamas seized Gaza from Abbas in 2007, reducing his control to parts of the West Bank.

Hamas supporters took part in Thursday's celebrations. In the West Bank city of Hebron, some in a crowd of several thousand raised green Hamas flags, while in the city of Ramallah, senior figures of Hamas and Islamic Jihad, two militant groups normally opposed to Abbas, addressed the crowd.

"It's the right step in the right direction," Nasser al-Shaer, a former deputy prime minister from Hamas, said of the U.N. bid.

In Hamas-ruled Gaza, several thousand took to the streets, most of them Abbas loyalists. Marchers hoisted Palestinian flags and chanted, "We want our state, today is our date."

While the U.S. focused on pressuring Abbas, Israel concentrated on trying to line up European powers against the measure. But European nations were more interested in bolstering the moderate Abbas in his rivalry with Hamas.

The Palestinians did not need the European backing to win the vote for their bid. Support from most of the developing world, including Arab and Muslim states, assures them an automatic majority in the General Assembly.

But they hope that breaking down the resistance of European heavyweights will further isolate Israel diplomatically, lead to further international criticism of Israeli settlements, and renew pressure on it to withdraw from territories the Palestinians claim for a state.

As potential support fell away, Israel tempered its threats of retaliation, appearing to back off from plans to immediately punish the Palestinians.

Months ago it suggested new settlement construction would be Israel's response to the Palestinians' statehood bid. Now officials are saying they will wait to see whether the Palestinians use their new standing to pursue war crimes charges against Israel in the International Criminal Court, a U.N. body. If so, they threaten punitive measures but have not given details.

Backing for the Palestinians' appeal to the U.N. came from an unexpected quarter Thursday, when former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was quoted as saying the Palestinian request "is congruent with the basic concept" of the two-state solution.

"Therefore, I see no reason to oppose it," said Olmert, according to The Daily Beast news website. An Olmert spokesman did not return a call for comment.

Olmert, Abbas and their teams conducted peace talks in 2007 through early 2009, but never clinched a deal.

Japan unveils prototype of new maglev train, promises speeds of up to 311 mph

DNP Japan unveils prototype of its first maglev train, promises 311 mph speeds

More than a year after the Central Japan Railway Company (JR Tokai) received construction approval to get going on its maglev railways, it has finally unveiled a Series L0 prototype that would put its current bullet train system to shame. Designed to travel at 311 mph, a single one of these high-speed marvels is designed to carry about 16 carriages, which translates to about 1,000 commuters. While Japanese travelers already enjoy a speedy 90-minute trip from Tokyo to Nagoya, this new maglev system promises to cut that journey to just 40 minutes. Announced nearly five years ago, the project has since been extended to include an Osaka-Tokyo leg and will cost around nine trillion yen (approximately $112 billion) when all is said and done. Don't pack your bags just yet though; the maglev's Nagoya rail isn't scheduled to go live until 2027, and the boarding call for Osaka isn't until 2045. Of course, if you need to ride electromagnetic rails now, there's always China's Shanghai Transrapid, which has been ferrying passengers at around 501km/h (311mph) since 2004 -- it's even planning a whopping 1,000 km/h vacuum-tube maglev train in just a year or so. Of course, those of us on the other end of the Pacific are still waiting for that long-delayed California-Nevada maglev project to work out. Sigh.

How to Become Recertified in Pet Loss Grief Counseling

November 22nd, 2012 by admin

There are already a significant number of pet loss grief counselors in the United States. They have been certified to offer mental health and emotional support in a unique field. However, those with certification should be aware of the requirements to get recertified. Certification typically lasts three years. To be eligible to renew pet loss grief certification, the medical doctor, nurse or minister must have been actively practicing. In other words, it may be desirable to reapply several months before current certifications are due to lapse. The counselor must have been in practice for about 500 hours or more during the last two or three years. He or she should also have had 50 hours of continuing education. The standards for pet loss grief continuing education are somewhat tolerant and can include seminars and college courses. Publications in academic journals may meet up to half of the 50 hour requirement.

Official visit of President Serzh Sargsyan to the Republic of Lebanon

On 26 November, President Serzh Sargsyan has arrived to the Republic of Lebanon of the official visit

At the residence of the President of Lebanon, after the official ceremony of welcoming the President of Armenia, Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Michel Suleiman conducted private negotiations which were followed by the negotiations in the extended format with the participation of the delegations of the two states.

After the negotiations, there took place the ceremony of signing official documents. In particular, signed were Agreements on the ?Visa free regime for the holders of diplomatic and service passports? and ?Mutual recognition of the higher education and academic titles.?

After the ceremony of document signing, President Serzh Sargsyan planted a tree in the Presidential Garden as a token of the Armenian-Lebanese friendship.

At the Presidential residence, the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan and the President of the Republic of Lebanon Michel Suleiman recapped the results of the negotiations at the joint press conference.

In the framework of his visit, on 26 November President Serzh Sargsyan met with the Prime Minister of Lebanon Najib Mikati. Before that, Serzh Sargsyan visited the Martyrs Square in Beirut, paid tribute, and laid a wreath at the monument.

At the meeting with the Prime Minister of Lebanon Najib Mikati stressed the importance of the economic component of the bilateral cooperation, noting that the turnover between the two countries is still inadequate.

President Sargsyan and Prime Minister Najib Mikati underscored the importance of giving a new impetus to the works of the Armenian-Lebanese intergovernmental economic commission which, according to the parties, can seriously boost the improvement of the turnover indices, encourage investments, and establish a closer cooperation between the business circles of the two countries. From the viewpoint of boosting the bilateral cooperation, the parties among perspective areas mentioned in particular agriculture, tourism, and high-tech. At the meeting, discussed was also the idea of establishing a Joint Trade and Industrial Chamber.

***

In honor of President Serzh Sargsyan and Mrs. Rita Sargsyan, who are in the Republic of Lebanon of the official visit, the President of Lebanon Michel Suleiman last night gave an official dinner.

In his toast addressed to the President of Lebanon, his spouse, the President of the National Assembly, Prime Minister and all those present at the official dinner, Serzh Sargsyan expressed gratitude for the warm welcome on the hospitable soil of Lebanon - the country which is so dear to the hearts of the Armenians.

President Serzh Sargsyan spoke of the past of the two ancient, friendly nations, high-level political dialogue existing now between the reliable partners ? Armenia and Lebanon, as well as about the desire and readiness to further deepen and develop interstate multifaceted relations. The President of Armenia wished Lebanon and its people peace, prosperity and unwavering national unity.

?Relations of our two peoples come from the time immemorial, while Armenian presence in Lebanon is centuries-long. I believe it is not accidental that two hundred fifty years ago the first Armenian Catholic Catholicos, who was officially recognized by the Pope, established his residence here, in Lebanon. Armenians have brought their indispensable participation to the deliberation of Lebanon from the Ottoman Empire. During the World War I, the last leader of the autonomous Mount Lebanon was an ethnic Armenian, Ohannes Pasha Kuyumjian who was fighting to save the population of the region from the oppressions of the Young Turks. After his toppling and the autonomy's destruction, the Ottoman Empire launched a series of massacres in Lebanon.

It is my deepest conviction that the Armenian and Lebanese peoples are more than just friends. At the most difficult times in the history of the Armenian nation, Lebanon became a beacon of salvation for the thousands of Armenians who had been deprived of their homeland. How else, if not brotherly, can one describe our current relations?

Peaceful and creative existence of the Armenian diaspora of many thousands is the best proof of it. And naturally I am proud for my compatriots present in this hall. I am grateful to you, dear compatriots, for making us so recognizable, for upholding our prestige here, in Lebanon as well. It was here, in Lebanon that some of the largest Armenian spiritual, cultural and educational centers were formed, which play an important role in the preservation of the Armenian national identity in Spyurk. The Great House of Cilicia, Armenian Catholic Patriarchate, the only Armenian university abroad ? Haykazyan Universy and a large number of the Armenian spiritual, cultural and other values preserved and cherished in this land for centuries bond forever us and histories of our peoples,? President Serzh Sargyan said.

Iraq war contractor says federal government should pay $100 million in lawsuit damages, fees

PORTLAND, Ore. - An Iraq war contractor that lost an $85 million verdict to a group of sickened U.S. soldiers has filed a lawsuit seeking to force the federal government to pay the soldiers' damages.

In early November, 12 Oregon National Guard soldiers won the verdict against Kellogg Brown and Root, an engineering and construction firm that helped lead the reconstruction work in post-war Iraq. The soldiers were exposed to a toxin while guarding an Iraqi water plant.

In the new lawsuit, KBR also demands that the government pay more than $15 million in its attorneys' fees.

At the heart of the suit is a so-called indemnification clause that KBR alleges it agreed to with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in March 2003. The clause was designed to protect KBR against "unusually hazardous risks" in its work in Iraq.

In a Nov. 16 filing in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, KBR argues the clause makes the government responsible for the results of its actions in Iraq, including the Oregon verdict.

"Based upon an erroneous legal and factual analysis of the terms of the indemnification agreement, (the Army Corps) has refused to indemnify (KBR) for the costs of defending against the various third-party lawsuits," KBR attorneys wrote, "and has refused to participate or assume direct responsibility in defending (KBR) in the underlying tort litigations."

KBR said in the suit that it had no insurance to cover its wartime work, and the government's refusal to involve itself in lawsuits constitutes a breach of the indemnification agreement.

A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers spokesman declined to comment on Tuesday, citing the ongoing litigation. Emails and messages to KBR were not immediately returned Tuesday afternoon, and KBR's attorneys declined to comment.

At least another 130 lawsuits are pending from soldiers in England, Texas, Indiana and West Virginia, as well as other Oregon soldiers who were present at the Iraqi water plant, called Qarmat Ali.

A jury found the company guilty of negligence for illnesses the soldiers who guarded Qarmat Ali, an oilfield water plant.

The three-week trial ended after just two days of deliberation by the jury. The suit was the first concerning soldiers' exposure to a toxin the plant.

The soldiers said they suffer from respiratory ailments after their exposure to sodium dichromate, and they fear that a carcinogen the toxin contains, hexavalent chromium, could cause cancer later in life.

Mitt Romney's Loss Is Comprehensive Immigration Reform's Gain

By: Marc A. Wites, Wites & Kapetan, P.A.

In recent years legal status, and an eventual pathway to citizenship, for millions of hard working illegal immigrants has been repeatedly blocked by the conservative wing of the Republican Party.? Even when President George W. Bush attempted to overhaul the United State?s immigration policy with the proposed Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007, his efforts were blocked by his fellow republicans in Congress.? However, with the re-election of President Barack Obama, who won 71% of the Latino vote, the Republicans are changing their tune.

On NBC?s Meet the Press, Democratic Senator Charles E. Schumer of New York announced that he and Republican Senator Lindsey Graham are working with their colleagues to reach a consensus on immigration reform, and hope to pass a new law this year. Although short on details, Schumer explained that the plan will include first securing the borders to prevent more illegal immigration; providing legal immigrants with proper documentation required for employment; allowing immigration for those that contribute to the US economy, whether as engineers or farm workers; and establishing a pathway to citizenship the requires immigrants to learn English, have a job, not commit crimes and ?go to the back of the line.? ?The Republican House Speaker John Boehner made similar comments in a recent interview with ABC News, stating that he was confident that President Obama and the Congress can find common ground to resolve the country?s immigration issues.

The Republicans apparent softening position on immigration is a one hundred and eighty degree turn from their past. ?In 2007 when Bush?s immigration bill failed, 37 Republicans voted against it. They complained that allowing what Republicans have termed ?amnesty? would reward lawbreakers who entered the country illegally.

The same sentiment prevented President Obama from passing immigration reform during his first term. As a result, President Obama signed an Executive Order that created a new program called Deferred Action, which is administered by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (?U.S.C.I.S?). It allows qualifying individuals to apply for deferred deportation action for two years, subject to renewal. Many of its provisions mirror those in the proposed ?Dream Act? which Senate Republicans blocked in 2010, but which remained a prominent item on the President?s agenda. While not identical to the Dream Act, the newly-announced program is available to individuals who (1) are at least sixteen years old, but no older than thirty, (2) have been brought to the U.S. before they were sixteen, (3) have lived in the U.S. for at least the five continuous years before their application, and (4) be currently enrolled in school, have graduated from high school, received a G.E.D., or have been honorably discharged from the armed forces.

Many believe that it was this Executive Order, which demonstrated President Obama?s commitment to the immigrant community that allowed Democrats to win the Latino vote and secure the President?s re-election. Attorney Alex Kapetan of Wites & Kapetan agrees. Mr. Kapetan, who directs Wites & Kapetan?s immigration practice, explained that South American immigrants are smart, hard working people, and they are well aware that it was the Republicans that for years have blocked immigration reform. ?The Republicans ignored the practical reality that you just can?t round up 11 million people and send them back to their home country, and likewise ignored that those Americans of Latino descent would not look kindly upon Republican obstructionism and would show their displeasure at the polls?, stated Kapetan.

Republicans seem to feel that Mitt Romney?s defeat is a message from the Latino community. Whether because they realize that to win future elections in the United States will require a candidate to have the support of the immigrant community, or because they have realized that millions of illegal immigrants already here simply want to work, pay taxes and support their families, its seems that real change may be on the horizon.? Most Americans agree that we must secure our borders, stop illegal immigration, and deport those that enter our country illegally. At the same time, the country?s current illegal immigrant population is here because the United States failed to enact and enforce immigration laws that would stop illegal immigration and reward those that come to America and contribute to our great country. Let us hope that the Republicans have realized that they must work with Democrats to find solutions to all of America?s problems, and perhaps we?ll find that comprehensive immigration reform is on the top of their list.

Marc A. Wites is an attorney with Wites & Kapetan, P.A., a South Florida based law firm with offices throughout the country.? The firm?s practice areas include immigration, and their staff speaks Spanish and Portuguese.

Great Books for Kids and Teens: It's Monday 11/26! What Are You ...

I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends.? We drove to Rochester, NY, (my hometown) for the long weekend, stayed with my dad and his wife, and enjoyed lots of visits with family and friends.? It was a very nice weekend, and it was great to see everyone!? Now we are back home, with lots to do!

So, we didn't have a lot of time for reading last week.? Unfortunately, I can't read a book in the car (I get sick), but I can manage flipping through magazines, so I caught up on months' worth of magazines that had piled up!? Besides those, here is what we all read last week:

  • I am STILL working my way through Middlemarch by George Eliot.? It is a hefty one, and I am feeling ready to move onto something else....but I am still enjoying it and want to see what happens - 200 pages to go!
  • My husband, Ken, is reading Michael Connelly's The Fifth Witness (a Lincoln Lawyer novel) and enjoying it.
  • Jamie, 18, can read in the car (lucky!), so he finished City of Ashes (#2), read City of Glass (#3), and has started City of Fallen Angels (#4), in his quest to re-read Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series for the third time, in preparation for book #5 which was recently released.
Believe it or not, I did manage to post two book reviews before we left last Wednesday: Night Strangers by Chris Bohjalian, a spooky, suspenseful novel, and The Freedom Maze by Delia Sherman, a middle-grade/teen audio book.? I enjoyed both novels very much.

What are you and your family reading this week?

(What are you reading Monday is hosted by Sheila at Book Journey, with a kid/teen version hosted by Teach Mentor Texts.)

Bangladeshis protest after fire that killed 112

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) ? Thousands of Bangladeshi workers demanding justice after a garment-factory fire killed at least 112 people are blocking the streets of a Dhaka suburb in a protest that has turned violent at times.

Angry workers on Monday threw stones at factories, smashed vehicles and blocked a major highway in the area. Some 200 factories were closed for the day after the protest erupted in Savar, the industrial zone where Saturday's deadly fire occurred.

Officials say many workers were trapped in the eight-story building, which lacked emergency exits. Firefighters have pulled out at least 100 bodies, and 12 more people died at hospitals after jumping from the building.

Unions in Bangladesh have long complained about unsafe factories where workers work in dismal sweatshop conditions.

Jammer's Blog: Becky's Wedding

So Becky got married. I don?t believe it either. It?s not because she?s unattractive. On the contrary, she?s a shorter version of my gorgeous wife. There are two things I just want to point out. First, to me, Becky didn?t seem ready for a commitment like marriage. Before she started dating her husband, Josiah, she had been in a short relationship. People get in and out of relationships all the time, so that?s not a big deal. However, the issue with this particular relationship was that you could smell the stench of horse feces off of this guy a mile away, and she didn?t pick up on it. In her defense, none of the other family members did either. Maybe it was because he was white and white people just trust other white people. Whatever. (Also in her defense, she wasn?t the first person, nor will she be the last, to have one of those, ?what was I thinking?? relationships- myself included).

Second, I was the only person who called the guy?s bluff. You know the thing that makes Becky really upset? It wasn?t about the relationship not working out, but that I was absolutely right from day one. It burns her, and I enjoy that.

So you could imagine when she started dating Josiah about 20 minutes after her relationship ended with this ?other guy,? I naturally had some reservations. Interestingly enough, he was also white. And you know what? That?s right, you guessed it; the family immediately embraced him. Did anyone ask for my opinion? Of course not, I?ve only had a 100% track record. So what do I know?

I don?t know Josiah all that well, but I did have one conversation with him. And you know what? That?s all it took for him to earn my approval (not that anyone was asking for it). The conversation was in stark contrast when compared to the ?other guy.? I saw genuine character in both what he was communicating and the way in which he was communicating it. He had clear purpose about what he wanted to do with his life and articulated his vision like a man who actually had given it some thought. The conversation was pleasant and refreshing. As long as he remembers he?s son-in-law #2 things should be fine.

Fast forward to the wedding day: Josiah and Becky decided to have their wedding reception the same place we had our wedding. I remember it like it was yesterday. My wife and I had a nice swing dancing routine for our first dance because we didn?t want the 7-minute slow song hug that starts getting awkward after 2-mintues. Each of my groomsmen gave an excellent speech, and Becky had an epic emotional meltdown before anyone even handed her the microphone. It was good memories all around.

Now I?m sitting at my table enjoying the moment holding my baby girl while I watch my wife give the wedding toast (she did an excellent job). Then it hits me, I have a child and my wife?s little sister is becoming a woman right before my eyes. All of these memories of Becky start flooding into my mind. Like the first time I picked up Katie for a date and saw Becky who basically looked like a smaller version of Katie with braces and the raspy voice of person whose been smoking for 40 years. I also thought of all the immature rants and emotional meltdowns that didn?t involve having to give a wedding speech. I remember hearing all her complaints about things that were insignificant and wondering if she would ever ?get it.?

Flashing back to my table at the reception: Becky was a beautiful bride and looked like the woman she had grown into. My in-laws never had a doubt she would someday ?get it.? Maybe that?s the kind of unconditional love and patience I?ll need to give my daughter. Maybe kids from strong Christian families should be given the same amount of grace as those who grew up in broken homes. Maybe maturity can?t be rushed but only nurtured, like it was for me. Maybe there?s a lesson in all of this for me.

Anyway, there is a sense of excitement I feel for my sister-in-law. There?s also a genuine happiness that she found a good man (even though nobody asked for my opinion). Perhaps the most exciting aspect of it all? She?s going to be stationed in Japan for 3 years and the prospect of Becky in a foreign country should give way to plenty of source material for comedic relief.

In the event that there is no expectation associated with payment, the money can be viewed as a gift. The actual provider could not sue with regard to payment later within a city fit. But when the credit provider designates the amount of money just like a loan as well as the consumer will pay back again even a buck, the cash may very well be a legitimate loan as well as the loan company can demand payment anytime. Since they are short-term lending products, they can be little; different from $100 to $1500 as well as repayment arrives in the next payday. They might make use of a variety of conditions to find out if your potential consumer is skilled for a financial loan. Past credit score is virtually always deemed, together with existing revenue and also assets. The aim of the borrowed funds may also be a good issue-a established expense opportunity might have much more appeal compared to an misguided concept for just about any new restaurant. One essential point may be the earnings to credit card debt percentage from the client. May the client have the ability to pay the loan back with interest? Professional loan companies generally 'sell' cash, consequently borrowers should be aware just how much funding truly 'costs' in relation to real money.

Lawsuit against Madonna dismissed in Russia

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) ? A Russian court on Thursday dismissed a lawsuit that sought millions of dollars in damages from Madonna for allegedly traumatizing minors by speaking up for gay rights during a concert in St. Petersburg.

The ruling came after a one-day hearing that bordered on the farcical. During it, plaintiffs claimed that Madonna's so-called "propaganda of perversion" would negatively affect Russia's birthrate and erode the nation's defense capability by depriving the country of future soldiers. At one point, the judge threatened to expel journalists from the courtroom if they laughed too much.

In the end, the Moskovsky district court in St. Petersburg threw out the Trade Union of Russian Citizens' lawsuit and the 333 million rubles ($10.7 million) it sought from the singer for allegedly exposing youths to "homosexual propaganda."

Madonna did not attend the trial, and her publicist Liz Rosenberg said Thursday the star wouldn't comment about it.

Anti-gay sentiment is strong in Russia, particularly in St. Petersburg, where local legislators passed a law in February that made it illegal to promote homosexuality to minors. Six months later, Madonna criticized the law on Facebook, then stood up for gay rights during a concert in St. Petersburg that drew fans as young as 12.

"Who will children grow up to be if they hear about the equal rights of the lesbian lobby and manly love with traditional sexual relations?" one of the plaintiffs, Darya Dedova, testified Thursday. "The death rate prevails over the birth rate in the West; young guys are becoming gender neutral."

The plaintiffs submitted evidence about gay culture drawn from Wikipedia pages, claiming that a real encyclopedia could not have articles about homosexuality.

"We aren't against homosexual people, but we are against the propaganda of perversion among minors," Dedova told the court. "We want to defend the values of a traditional family, which are currently in crisis in this country. Madonna violated our laws and she should be punished."

Madonna, who performed in Moscow and St. Petersburg in August as part of her world tour, also angered Russian officials by supporting jailed members of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot. The American said during her Moscow concert that she would "pray for them," then turned around so the audience could see the words "Pussy Riot" written on her back. The singer also donned a ski mask similar to those worn by Pussy Riot.

Despite international outrage, three of that band's members were sentenced to two years in jail on hooliganism charges for performing a "punk prayer" at Moscow's main cathedral, during which they pleaded with the Virgin Mary to deliver Russia from President Vladimir Putin. One of the Pussy Riot members was later released from jail on appeal, but the other two were sent to prison camps to serve their sentences.

Thanks from?and for?a Lisa Fund Researcher | Fight Colorectal ...

Pausing today to give thanks for this amazing Fight Colorectal Cancer community, we?d like to especially salute the doctors, nurses, family and friends who work every single day to support people living with colorectal cancer, and to the researchers who devote endless days and nights fighting this disease.

Just before the holiday, we got a final progress report from Dr. Jon Chung, who received the 2011 Lisa Fund grant. ?Every single dollar that supported his work came from this community of people who donated to the Lisa Fund, so you should know what your generous donations brought:

?I am extremely grateful for the award of this grant. It has been hugely beneficial in my career. Since the end of the grant funding period, I have been promoted to faculty at Johns Hopkins? As a result of this grant, the laboratory has developed a firm interest in developing [new] inhibitors for Hedgehog signaling?in colorectal cancer?an area of research that had not been previously a focus of the laboratory. I believe that the focus cancer signaling pathways will be a feature of my current and future career as a cancer researcher.? ???

Dr. Chung is researching one of the signaling ?pathways? that cause colorectal cancer to change from localized to metastatic disease. During his Lisa-funded year, he and his coworkers identified a new gene involved with activating Hedgehog, which eventually could lead to a new biomarker test.

So thank you: Not only did your contributions build a concrete step forward in the fight against metastatic cancer, but you made a life-changing impact on a promising young scientist?and a whole laboratory.

?

At our Thanksgiving tables today, there are a few beloved faces missing?I think of Lisa Dubow, who started the Lisa Fund as thanks for researchers who gave her an extra 9 years of life. And I think of Kate Murphy, who started this blog to bring Research news to you, and who also used her years living with cancer to make a huge impact on countless lives.

In the great circle of life, their legacy lives into the future, thanks to people like Dr. Chung and you in this community.

?Read more: about Dr. Chung?s work,? and Lisa Dubow.

Tunnelers, aid agencies begin resupplying battered Gaza

RAFAH, Gaza Strip (Reuters) - Knee-deep in craters carved out by Israeli air strikes, Palestinians wielded shovels and sandbags to reopen tunnels used to smuggle in goods from Egypt to Gaza, while international aid agencies raced to replenish Gaza's depleted supplies.

They were same type of tunnels that Israel, which destroyed 140 of them in its air campaign, says were used to smuggle in rockets that lashed its cities and towns by the hundreds during the recent fighting.

Gaza militant groups and Israel on Wednesday agreed to a truce, but the Jewish state will not lighten its blockade of the enclave, Israeli sources said, as some Hamas officials had hoped it might. The Rafah border crossing with Egypt also remained mostly closed to traffic.

The impoverished enclave's food supply remained stable despite eight days of withering Israeli air assaults aimed at Palestinian militants, but medical supplies were running short.

Workers say the attacks destroyed more than two-thirds of the cross-border tunnels that bring cement, fuel and food - as well as weapons - into the coastal strip blockaded by Egypt and Israel since the Hamas Islamist group began its rule there in 2007.

"Our job is to bring the children and families of Gaza rice, chocolate and a way of surviving," said Hussein Seida, 21.

"We were afraid for our lives to come out and work in the last few days, but now we rebuild. We'll do anything to help our people, we'll build a tunnel to China if we need to," he said, clutching a hammer in his dirt-covered hands.

None of the tunnel workers interviewed said they had handled military materiel, and all said they were eager to reopen them for the sake of Gaza's civilians, and their own livelihoods.

"I can count the number of tunnels working now on one hand," said long-time tunneler Ahmed al-Aida. "There's so much work to be done before we can get back to normal."

Wednesday's ceasefire ended eight days of lopsided fighting in Gaza and Israel that killed more than 160 Palestinians and six Israelis.

For the more than 1,000 wounded Palestinians recovering in hospitals, deliveries of medicine by the World Health Organization and other aid agencies after the ceasefire arrived just in time.

"But for many people, the aid that arrived was too little, too late," Willow Heske of global aid organisation Oxfam said.

Basic medicines in Gaza have run low since Palestinian factions fought a brief civil war in 2007, cutting off Gaza from medical supplies in the West Bank.

As casualties poured into Gaza's overwhelmed hospitals during the bombings, the dearth of medicines grew worse, but stocks are now being returned to pre-crisis levels. The World Health Organization rushed 11 truckloads of medical supplies through a border crossing specially opened by Israel.

STORES BUZZING AGAIN

Food stocks stayed stable during the fighting in Gaza, where international food aid and imports are critical. The main commercial crossing, Kerem Shalom, was shut on Tuesday after it was hit by mortars, but has since resumed operations.

Cocoa Puffs cereal, potato chips and pasta of all kinds piled the shelves of supermarkets, but the aisles were devoid of customers who chose to stay home as Israeli drones and distant airstrikes shook the air before the ceasefire took effect.

Gaza farmers, fisherman and traders were especially hard-pressed by the violence, as many skipped work for the last week to dodge the bombs. But not everyone did so.

As Tamer Bashier, 31, an impoverished produce vendor ventured out by motor rickshaw to replenish his stocks on Tuesday, he was killed in an Israeli air strike, said the Ma'an Development centre, a local aid organisation linked to Oxfam.

Now safe to travel, Gaza's streets are packed.

The al-Qishawi supermarket in downtown Gaza city, derelict just hours before, teemed with families on Thursday morning as stock clerks wheeled carts of canned beans down the aisles.

"Do you see how things changed for us so totally," Hussein Qishawi beamed, waving groceries past the check-out scanner.

"Yesterday people were stuck in their houses, and when they came, they bought enough to last them for days. Now we're almost back to normal, thank God."
