Santa Claus among best seasonal jobs, elves not so much

The best job in terms of hourly wage is playing Santa Claus, which can pay up to $100 an hour.

The holiday season is a drain on many people's bank accounts, but for others it?s an opportunity to earn some extra cash through seasonal jobs, the Nashville Business Journal reports.

But picking the right job is crucial, according to a study by CareerCast.com, which warns, "some jobs are the labor force equivalent of a lump of coal in your stocking."

The best job in terms of hourly wage is playing Santa Claus, which can pay up to $100 an hour.

Retail salespersons and food servers ranked high on the nice list as well, with those positions projected to account for hundreds of thousands of temporary hires this holiday season.

Topping the list of worst seasonal jobs is Santa's elf. Apparently wrangling sometimes frightened children onto and off of Santa's lap is less glamorous and pays much worse than wearing the fat suit. The study says elves typically earn minimum wage, and competition for the jobs is fierce.

Here's the list of best jobs, followed by worst:

Best

  • Santa Claus
  • Retail salesperson
  • Volunteer
  • Parcel deliverer
  • Food server
  • Candy maker

Worst

  • Santa?s elf
  • Christmas tree lot attendant
  • Snow remover
  • Airport help
  • Taxi driver
