Hey all Can you answer a question for me about wages? I am yet to find a Canadian job ad with a wage level on it, so can't make a good comparison with UK wages. Essentially, I'm a marketing communications manager who (before the Government cuts) controlled a ?250,000 budget with a team of 4 working across all forms of marketing, advertising and PR communication. I earn around ?35k pa. With the exchange rate, this would be $57k pa (roughly). However, I've seen comments from Canadian contacts about wages and how some starting salaries are around $40k pa. So I'm really confused about my earnings potential, which will affect mortgage potential, where to live and where to go and check out in June. So any help would be awesome! Thanks |
Currency conversion, IMHO, is not a very helpful tool for gauging salary expectations. I came over at $2.20 to the pound, and it worked out very nicely for me as that was the basis on which the company transferred my pay-scale (I was an internal transferee) but I'd have been completely stuffed trying the same trick at $1.50.
What sector are you looking to work in? I know you were in local govt in the UK (IIRC - it was you that did the Sussex seatbelt spot, wasn't it?) but that certainly shouldn't limit you to public sector opps here, which are notoriously hard to break into as an outsider.
I've just been through the process of finding a new job here - I'm in tech-focused b2b marketing working above and below the line and with all sorts of external agencies. I'm a bit British about discussing salaries etc in open forum, but if I can help by PM then drop me a line.
