One year following the events of Hurricane Sandy, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) will host a public reception on Monday, October 28, 2013, that will provide an opportunity to learn more about the Rebuild by Design teams' unique visions to make the New York/New Jersey region more resilient. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the NJIT Campus Center, Second Floor.

Last August, the President's Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force announced the selection of 10 multidisciplinary design teams to participate in Rebuild by Design, a unique competition that responds to Hurricane Sandy by asking the world's most talented design professionals to envision solutions that increase resilience across the Sandy-affected region. These teams were selected from more than 140 applicants representing the top engineering, architecture, design, landscape architecture, and planning firms as well as research institutes and universities worldwide.

The Rebuild by Design's 10 design teams will discuss their research and the ideas derived from their work. The proposals follow three months of in-depth analysis and public outreach, including both one-on-one conversations with people living in affected areas and robust guided conversations with Design Teams and citizens. This process will lead up to a selection of projects that each team will pursue in the design phasethe next and final portion of the competition.

At the end of the competition next spring, the resulting proposals will be evaluated by an expert jury, and winning design solutions may be able to be implemented with disaster recovery grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, as well as other sources of public and private-sector funding.

To register on line, visit https://rebuildbydesign-1028-nj.eventbrite.com/. Parking is available on MLK Blvd. and Raymond Boulevard. Those who are not able to attend in person can visit rebuildbydesign.org, where designs will be posted for public comment beginning on Monday, October 28, 2013.
