Reviewed: Incipio iPhone 5 Bespoke Case

Incipio iPhone 5 Bespoke Case

Price: $30

The first choice is whether or not to cover up your iPhone in a case. Sport a naked iPhone and you maintain the purity of the status symbol, but with an industrial design that's prettier than it is durable. A case on an iPhone makes it bulkier and uglier, but also probably longer lasting?and, if you use Incipio's bespoke case service, more personalized.

For $30, Incipio will print any image (and text) you want on a feather snap case, the lowest profile of the company's lineup. Unfortunately, you have to do all the work of creating the case on your phone itself, using the Bespoke app. This makes placing and cropping your image more difficult than it should be. Applying effects is easy, though, and the whole design process takes under a minute.

For my custom case, I tried to recreate Schreer Delights' now-discontinued retro Macintosh case. I did most of the work in Photoshop, where I could find just the right old-Mac tan, and then transferred the image to my phone for uploading. Although the text came out blurrier than it appeared on screen, the colors are all remarkably accurate. Incipio's service isn't perfect, but if you're clumsy and hesitant about getting just any generic case, it's a great option.
