Washington considers extending divorce waiting period to one year

US legislators in Washington state are considering the introduction of a one-year waiting period to finalise divorce.

Couples in the state are currently required to wait 90 days before a divorce can be ratified. But Republican senator Don Benton believes a significantly longer one year waiting period would have social benefits. He said:

?Increasing the waiting time for dissolution will be beneficial to families of our state and certainly will be beneficial to taxpayers of our state.?

Supporters of Senate Bill 5614 say it would encourage reconciliation and cut the number of divorces in the state, also reducing the burden on welfare and social services.

Opponents, meanwhile, claim the proposed legislation is too proscriptive. Democratic senator Adam Kline said:

?We?re talking about adults here. They have the opportunity for counselling without us having to force it on them.?

The so-called Family Second Chance Act was heard by the Washington Senate Law and Justice Committee on Friday. It would exempt marriages associated with violence or sexual offences.
